Welcome

Inspiration for this blog came from my cousin Roy. His daily reflections of the events in his life have been thoughtful and interesting. Family, friends, colleagues are welcome to read my blog.

WHERE DID THE MONTH GO

Was heard a lot today. It's already February tomorrow. I did not find the month to go quickly as the goals rather than resolutions set for 2011 are on track. Family celebrations, vacation week, progress on projects, granddaughter sleepover- well you get the picture. January is a tough month to get motivated for many. I guess they did not get started. I love January because there is no outside work to do at home- other than snow shovelling! Inside activities get my full attention. It seemed strange to me to hear anyone say the month went quickly- usually the complaint is about the summer goes by in a wink! Most people complain about the cold so one would think they are happier we are one month closer to Spring. I just feel happy I kept the one main goal- to have as many blogs as the days in the month! Did the month go quickly for you? Are you just happy to be trudging along? Are your goals for 2011 on track? Or derailed?

DO WE APPRECIATE DEMOCRACY?

No matter what we may think of individual politicians, Canada is a democratic country. As events continue to unfold in other parts of the world as people are craving their regimes to be over by demonstrating in the streets, do we as Canadians appreciate the freedoms we have? We can vote or not! As many people chose to stay home and not vote in all levels of government- a freedom that many in other nations desire. Our laws are exemplary and protect us. Our police and armed forces are there for us. We women have had the vote since 1917 and have not looked back. What freedoms do you cherish? What do you feel about our democracy? Do you love being a Canadian as I do? What are your thoughts?

SIMPLE SUNDAY PLEASURES

Often by slowing down to do the simple things, life really can be so enjoyable. Watching the Sunday Sermon on TV, some grocery shopping, a mid-morning breakfast, reading the papers cover to cover then deciding to work on some projects all brought a sense of being and doing today. Slowing my energy brought the joy of the day. By taking the time to think about the tasks at hand, I felt contentment and enriched my life. Made dinner for Adolph- he is usually is the cook so gave him a break. Oven meals are great that way- put them in the oven and continue to do other tasks while the cooking occurs. Do you have some Sunday pleasures? Are you alone? Are you with people? Saturday was busy as usual with the grandchildren but Sunday really was a day of rest!

BULLDOZERS ARE LIKE SOME PEOPLE

Pushy. Overstating their point of view. Noisy. They do get work done but can monopolize the environment. We need bulldozers. They have a purpose. However, it is good to know we can turn them off and leave with the key until we decide it's time to start them up again. Do you have bulldozers in your life? Are you a bulldozer? Maybe it's time to rest and let someone else have the spotlight!

HISTORICAL EVENTS IMPACT OUR LIVES

And often make us reflect about where we were, what we were doing and who was with us. I thought of this reflection after watching a segment of Canada AM about the 25th anniversary of the Space Shuttle explosion. My life has been influenced by the Kennedy assassination, the Viet Nam war and all the protests, Trudeau era, Diana/Charles wedding and her eventual death, major world disasters and of course, September 11th to name a few. Sometimes events coincide with situations in our own lives so the identification and emotions are closer. Our folks who lived through the Great Depression and World War Two brought their memories and experiences into our lives. Our children will have their own set of events that have an influence on them. Not everyone will have the same experience and observations from an event. Are there events that impacted your life and still bring emotions? Do you review history and see connections to today? Do we learn from those events? I find being connected to a big event somehow makes my small existence seem more important. Do you ever feel the same way?

YOU'VE GOT MAIL

We can receive mail in different forms. Email is fun but I still love the feel of sorting my mail- junk mail and all. It is like spam but I do not worry about a computer virus! Cards, bills, magazines and sometimes the odd letter makes its' way. Even a late Christmas Card arrived today that was sent Dec. 21/10. As a stamp collector, I still save the envelope with the stamp on it! It is even more exciting to receive a parcel! Door to door mail still occurs in older neighbourhoods. Since moving to this house in 1987, I have been going to my mailbox down the street so when a parcel arrives at my door it is a special occasion. Of course ordering online helps to keep bringing those parcels to my door. Letters saved from years of living can be a testament to those in our families. For decades I corresponded with an aunt in Edmonton. I have her letters in a little bundle. My mother does not write anymore due to her Dementia so her letters and cards remind me that there was a different time. Love letters, postcards and other written momentos arranged chronologically give a history that can be visited periodically. The correspondence can be part of the family history or arranged neatly in a scrapbook. Since I like the written word, I save significant emails as they too have valuable thoughts and family information. Do you like mail?

OUR MARKS IN THE SAND

We all like to make marks in the sand. Sand castles can be our artistic creation. Then a wave, the tide can wash all away. We must not fret at the loss but walk again on the beach, creating something else.
There is always another day- we like the water- ebb and flow!

TO ROBBIES EVERYWHERE

Well it's Robbie Burns Day. To Scotsmen it is a special day. I have been to a Robbie Burns Dinner/Dance once or twice in my life. Danced the "Gay Gordon" and listened to Ode to the Haggis. The name Robert is a strong name. Have a brother by that name. A cousin in Italy is Roberta- the feminine version of the name. Love Robert Redford and his movies. What about those other actors- Robert Di Niro and Robert Duvall. Baseball players- Roberto Alomar and Roberto Clemente. Books by Robert Ludlum have been so enjoyable. A famous Kennedy- Robert. From Germanic roots in the Middle Ages the name means bright fame. Do you have a favourite Robert in your life? Have you ever read the poetry by Robbie Burns? Here's to Rob, Bob, Robbie, Bobbie!

INSIGHT

Can come at the oddest moments in our lives. We can be looking at a situation from one direction, then the wind blows and we see it from the new perspective. A new understanding occurs. In a therapeutic process, the counsellor facilitates the linkages between the cause and the effect for the individual. The insight must come from the person in order to gain his/her own personal understanding. The dictionary meaning simply says- insight is the capacity of understanding hidden truths. For all of us, the connections will not be the same. One event does not have the same exact impact on everyone. For example, both my mother and a good friend of hers had lost their mothers at a very young age. One day when Arlene was visiting and discussing circumstances about an elderly aunt that she always helped. She had been very involved in her life even though the aunt did not seem to appreciate it. The aunt was related to her deceased mother. I remember remarking to her that she might just be a mother substitute for her. It was as if a light went off in Arlene's head. She stated do you mean I have been looking for my mother all these years? Insight. It gave her a renewed perspective and acceptance that she would continue to help the aunt. The relationship was vital to her. She had a much needed daughter role. What amazes me about insight is the time it may take to occur! Often in my life, I have questioned myself. Why didn't I figure something out sooner? We can hear our own voices saying the solution was right under our noses all the time. Perhaps we are not ready to accept the insightful meanings to events. Perhaps it is the living and the paths we take that bring us to them when we are ready. Have you had any new insightful moments recently? Do you have a story?

YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT

Til it's gone. A line from the Joni Mitchell 's 1970's song- Big Yellow Taxi, has been playing through my head today. Reminds me of my 20's- a statement song on the environment. It also reminds me to think of enjoying what I have before it's gone. Too often, we all rush through events in our lives. Having my little grandchildren reminds me to enjoy all their stages- even those terrible twos do not seem so terrible to me now! Just a stage! The little boys in my life are actually quite delightful with their language development soaring! Of course Joni's song has been recorded by other modern artists- it's a great song. Are you enjoying now? Are you enjoying the things in your life? Regrets- I've had a few!! If we all lived and enjoyed what we have in the present, still planning for our future as needed, life would have few regrets as well! Are you humming her song now?

SKATING CANADIAN STYLE

Skating is one sport that the majority of Canadians know how to do. I learnt from a very young age- think about 3 to skate. It was on a little patch of ice at the local school. Children go through several pairs of skates in their lifetime. Even while at York University, I would go with a group of friends to skate recreationally at the arena there after class. When my children were younger I would skate with them. Adolph made a backyard rink for several years at our old house in Thornhill and again when we moved to Richmond Hill. It was easier to put the kids in the backyard skating than driving somewhere with them. Every town and city across Canada has indoor and outdoor rinks for skating pleasure. Here in Richmond Hill, many people go to the Mill Pond for outdoor skating. Recreational and professional skating in varied fields such as figure skating, speed skating and hockey are enjoyed everywhere here in Canada. Did you know the oldest indoor skating rink is in Montreal, Quebec built in 1862- Victoria Skating Rink? The first Stanley Cup playoffs were played there in 1894. The Olympic Plaza in Downtown Calgary has had winter skating since the 1988 Olympics. Our Nation's capital- Ottawa- has the Rideau Canal Skateway- 7.8 km or 4.8 miles long. Doing some research for this blog I discovered it is not the longest- Winnipeg, Manitoba- has the longest ice skating rink- 8.5 km or 5.3 miles long. I wonder if family members living there have skated it and can brag about their accomplishments!! Although a small rink in comparison, Nathan Phillip's Square in Toronto is a fun skate. Reminds me of my youth and a cheap date there with Adolph! Children and youth everywhere enjoy their local arenas, frozen ponds or rivers. Many famous hockey stars started this way. Winter skating- a reason to be outside with the little ones! Do you have favourite places you like to go skating?

KEYS

Does he have the key to my heart? What is the key to success? A key-that little object that opens and closes a lock has so many meanings in our language. It unlocks a door or a mystery. There are keys on an instrument like a piano. Each key has a different sound. Some people sing "off key". The keys on a keyboard allow us to type and convey a message on our computer. There can be a master key in many buildings that open all the doors. You could be the key witness in a trial. In a problem it could be the key or main factor. Vandals may key a car making horrible stratches especially with expensive cars. In basketball, the key is an important part of the court. Many good shots have been made from the key. Even young children can be "latch key kids" when they have to arrive home alone until a parent returns from work. Alicia Keys is a popular musician and actress in the United States. The Florida Key is a favourite place for visitors in that state. In Tasmania, Australia there is Key Island. At Harbourfront in Toronto, there is Queen's Quay(pronounced as Key). Some people collect old keys. We all can have a variety of key chains to organize our keys. We have keys to our house, car, safety deposit box, music box, locker, office, lawn mover, garden shed, hotel room- well the list could go on! Where do you leave your keys? Many people wander around their places looking for their keys. How many times do we dig in our purses, ladies, looking for our keys too? Leaving a job- turn in your keys! Sometimes we would like a key to turn someone off!

THE DROPPED KEY AT TULUM YUCATAN COAST MEXICO

While visiting Cancun in 1990, a wonderful day trip
was the Mayan fortress by the sea- Tulum. Located 78 miles south of Cancun it has always been a popular archeological site to explore. Our visit started uneventful. I love history and taking photographs. I was enjoying every minute while Adolph's interest had dwindled. He was walking and tossing the car rental key in the air and catching it throughout the visit. We were standing by the Temple of the Wind observing the small "Castillo" across the small bay when Adolph dropped the key down a crevice in the rocks. We tried to see and find it with our hands to no avail. Trying different objects to put down the hole to try to fetch it did not work either. When we returned to our car, Adolph tried to hotwire it which worked , the engine started. However, could not move the gearshift. Fortunately for us, we were able to "bum" a ride back to our hotel with some other tourists who were visiting the site for the day. Explaining our dilemma to the car rental personnel, we obtained an extra key and with an expensive cab ride returned to Tulum the next day to fetch the vehicle. Before we parted, I left Adolph sitting with the key safely in his pocket while I revisited the site to capture photos of buildings missed the previous day. The morale of the story- always carry your keys with the little circle on your key chain through one finger. Many car keys have been locked in the car by others. Even had a brother-in-law years ago while manually locking his door and shutting it, threw his keys inside as he slammed the door shut. Do you have a lost key story to share?

IF LIFE GIVES YOU A BAD HAIR DAY

Wear a hat. There are times in life we simply do not feel great about something. So cover it up until the good times roll again. Unlike bad hair we do not have to tell the world how we are feeling. Actually wearing a hat for too long can you give a bad hair day- so there needs to be some balance. However, there are some fabulous hats to wear so do not be afraid to flaunt them. Bad hair versus a hat- chose the hat and make a statement about yourself! There is more than one way to look special! Looking special can sometimes help change the mood to feeling okay!

DO OPPOSITES ATTRACT?

We often hear that opposites attract. The gentle lady likes the bad boy. The neatnick marries the slob. In most relationships there are different personalities and varied interests. We are not clones of our partners. The differences can add depth and passion to any relationship. There has to be some common ground, however, for any couple to succeed. We can have different tastes in music or movies, for example, and survive. It is our core values that keep us together. If both are ambitious to get ahead then it strengthens the bond. If honesty is paramount to daily living, both can venture out. Areas like love of life, family, and a sense of self
that manifest through the partnership keep it going. Most couples have their own common ground. Sometimes it is difficult to articulate what it is. It is when the ground shifts and one starts to change in a different direction that trouble may brew. We could redefine the concept of opposites. We could say each person has strengths they bring to the relationship. Thus it is interdependent. We rely on each other. It may be scary that we are more like our partners than we think. It is often said that couples who are together for a long time start to look like each other. Interesting thought! Are your core values similar to your other half? Are you more alike than originally thought? Are your differences helpful to your relationship?

PHOTOS CAPTURE MOMENTS

One January project is the organization of the family photographs from the last few months. Finished scrapbooking Christmas 2010 and finding photos for the new frames received as gifts. Since digital technology helped reduce the cost of enlargements, I make many of my photos into those larger sizes. It becomes a dilemma - do I frame them and put them on the wall or a surface? or do I simply put them in an album for larger prints? I take many pictures because I love to capture the memories of the events in my life. My travel albums, for example, were scrapbooked long before the concept became trendy. I revisit them occasionally as I like to reread the little vignettes I wrote in them. Some of those earlier stories have been used in my blog along with the travel photos. Many people now just leave their photos in computer files, on their phone or on Facebook for the world to see. For me, the majority of pictures are out in full view in my home but kept private. There are some cute ones of the grandchildren- for some reason it is easy to take moments that are so endearing! What are your favourite photos? Is your home inundated with pictures or are they tucked away?

SNOW BENCH

Winter photos can be found everywhere. I took this picture after a recent snowstorm on my back porch. My simple plastic green bench became a Snow Bench. Do you have interesting winter photos?

STRESS WITHOUT DISTRESS

Was a book written by Hans Selye in 1974. He was a professor at the University of Montreal. It was a marker for theory on stress. He really advised observing the wisdom of the body. Mr. Selye believed in altuistic egotism by helping others, gaining their goodwill and trust for your good. Thus you have a sense of security and self-esteem. His motto was to earn your Neighbour's love. Interesting to revisit a book from university days. Stress does mean different things to different people. Some stress in our lives gives us motivation to perform, strive and even achieve. Too much negative stress can cause heightened anxiety and even affect our immune system. Too little stress can lead to boredom. There is so much literature written on stress and how to cope with it. Do you have strategies you use to cope with the stressors in your life? Are you tired of being told don't stress the small things? When we take care of the little problems, the big problems take care of themselves! It is also wise advice - I just don't know who said it first.

IT'S COLD OUTSIDE

Since I started to walk to and from work all year round, the seasonal changes do not bother me anymore. By spending 20 minutes outdoors each way, it really is not a long time to be outside and is actually refreshing. What surprises me is the whining this time of year about how cold it is! It's winter in Canada and it is supposed to be cold. Some people work outside for hours every day. Sports enthusiasts will spend time on ski slopes, outdoor rinks skating or even jogging for hours. Then why do so many complain about their little run from their car to a heated building. My grandchildren are learning to enjoy the winter activities. They want to be outside. I remember as a little girl loving to have snow. Wanting to go skating. Enjoying the family outings tobogganing with a thermos of hot chocolate and cookies as the snack. So when does it change that winter becomes a drag! For years when I had to drive in bad weather, I really hated it too! Then I decided it is a season that comes around every year. By venturing into it, it does seem to go faster. Actually walking in snow or outside in the cold does burn more calories! Are you one of those whiners- it's cold outside!

ONE HUNDRED BOTTLES OF BEER

On the wall! If one of those bottles should happen to fall, there'll be 99 bottles of Beer and so on. It is a popular song for youth at camp or in a singsong at a "get together". Perhaps adults like to sing it too. The movie- Ghost featured the song as the way Patrick Swayze's character was trying to get Whoopee's character to help him. It is a rather annoying song as it seems to go on and on. One can sing it for hours. I wonder who created the song. Does anyone know? Where did it originate? I do not think it is Canadian. Or perhaps it is!

A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

Is another popular phrase. I use it often in counselling as a way to visualize the pain someone is experiencing when there does not seem to be an end in sight to the problem. The light to me is just another way of encouraging hope. Are you looking for that light at the end of the tunnel?

ONE PERSON'S JUNK

Is another person's treasure. What a popular phrase! Don't we all wish we could turn all our junk into treasures for someone else with a bit of revenue added. Decluttering, downsizing, makes us evaluate many items in our lives. However, some things are just junk and deserve a trip to the curb!

LIVE LIFE TO LOVE

And love life while you live! I wrote this line back in High School under my picture in my Senior year in my School's yearbook. I really thought I was so mature and understood life's lessons. I read it now and realize it is not so easy to achieve. Sometimes we have events in our lives that make it difficult to love everything. Why? Some things are not worth loving. Sometimes we just live and get by. Love happens or not. There are days that are bearly tolerable- like someone experiencing raw grief. Then the moments that bring true joy and exhilaration! Finding someone or something to love does sustain us! It makes life wonderful! I try to look at many parts of my day with love. For example, Mondays can be intolerable. However, having been laid off twice in my career, I remember how it felt to get up on a Monday morning without a job- it was the worst feeling. Now I tell myself- I love Mondays- I have a job! By trying to love many ordinary moments in our lives, helps us to make a life fulfilled. Waiting for the big moments can waste a lot of good living! So loving life while you live may take some work. But it is worth the effort! Are you loving your life?

WINTER CHANGES THINGS

Snow covered objects suggest a different perspective. Do the chairs invite you to sit down ? Or do you want to leave them with the virgin snow? The plain black chairs are almost artistic, aren't they? I like to leave them as the snowflakes found a way to enhance them. The same way, I prefer snow on the ground to the brown, dirty look when there are warm spells during the winter. Walking home today I had those thoughts of enjoying the snow and how it cleans the world around me. Fresh layers of newly fallen snow are rather pretty! Extreme cold, however, is not so enjoyable! Too bundled up with most skin covered! I like the imagery this time of year. However, Winter photography has its challenges! Hard to take pictures with mitts! Do you have winter images you enjoy? Or do you wish Spring was closer?

PLAYING IN THE SNOW

While playing in the backyard with my
grandchildren, it made me think of the joys experienced with snow in my life. Nothing special occurred- we shovelled all the snow on the back porch into a big pile in order to make a future snowman when we have good packing snow for the head; wandered on the garden paths and made some snow angels. Little children can make play out of anything- a shovel, stick and snow! I was viewing the experience from the child's point of view. With all the gadgets, flashcards, electronic devices and the push to have little children constantly trying to be smarter and more advanced for their ages, the concept of imagination and cooperative play can be pushed aside. A backyard of snow and the fun of being outdoors was enough for the kids! Their parents take them skating and I believe some sledding activities will occur over the winter. The romp in the yard however brought lots of enjoyment! The grandkids wanted to stay outside longer-it was Nana who became cold and wanted the warmth of indoors! Can you make creative play from snow? Can you become the little child enjoying the simplicity of it? Can you put your gadgets aside taking in the outdoors?

A WALK IN THE SNOW

Snow is lighter than rain and for some reason is not as wet! When I am not in a hurry, a short walk in the snow is rather enjoyable. Driving in the snow is another consideration. I do not like it especially if there could be ice under the snow. Driving according to conditions is not always heeded by other drivers. So a walk is easier for me. Bundled up with layers of clothing and warm mitts, winter can bring satisfaction. Listening to the crunching on fresh snow by making my mark with my boots is rather delightful! Observing how the snow collects on trees and other objects adds to the moment! Snow is part of the Canadian experience! Do you enjoy snow in your own way?

JANUARY CELEBRATIONS

For many of us January brings the blahs after the festive season. In our family there are several birthdays, an anniversary and I always take a vacation week to break up the month. Many individuals spend time attending movies, scrapbooking, updating the little projects in their lives , going on Southern Beach vacations or just reading those good books sitting on a table. It is also a time many people can become depressed with the long nights and the urge to stay indoors. Reaching out to others and staying connected can help with the monotony of the long winter months. Have a celebrate winter party! Go to a winter festival! Be like a little child and take a slide down a hill- laughing like a little child! If you are Scottish, January 25th is Robbie Burns day- celebrate it! Do you have any January routines, celebrations? Tell me about them. Happy January and Happy Birthday to my hubbie!!

WINTER IMAGES

Winter brings the snow and the opportunity to see summer images with a winter theme. Photographers find the white accentuates the remaining summer vegetation in our gardens. The combination gives us many interesting photos. Lately my thoughts have turned to earlier life goals, relationships and dreams. How to incorporate those into life's continual aging process? It is not all or nothing but a work in progress. Do you find ways to combine the old with the new? Are you reinventing yourself? Do you like your new self? Like the seasons, we are in flux. Some people only spend their winters in warmer climates to avoid the winter and snow. Do we know others who try to deny life is moving them along? Do we become the person who avoids the winter of our lives pretending it is still summer or do we embrace each season with its unique offering? What do you think?

IF LIFE GIVES YOU SCRAPS

Make quilts. Colourful scraps of material and even pieces from old clothes were used in older times to make quilts that became blankets on many beds. The designs are traditional to different areas of North America. Applique, pieced, traditional and modern designs- hand quilted with small stitches, usually 7 to an inch or done by machine, quilts are beautiful works of art. Using triangles, blocks, strips of fabric each quilt can be its own masterpiece. One single block can not tell the story but many blocks sewn together in designs like the log cabin quilt in the photo give a larger picture. Life is like a bunch of scraps- we take the pieces and make our own unique quilt! If you could make a quilt about yourself, would it be tradtional? Or would your theme be more reflective of you and your life with significant objects included? What colours would be your pallet? Would you use plain fabric or try several designs together? Our quilt of life can be very interesting!

LOVE ME FLAWS AND ALL

There is so much advice and suggestions everywhere how to be the perfect wife, the perfect husband, the best sex goddess, perfect body and ageless face. We are bombarded every day to eat the best diet, the best exercise! Well love me flaws and all should be the message given. Learn to love yourself-flaws and all. Yes, eat well, exercise and enjoy your relationships respecting each others differences rather than working at them. Learn to love the others in your life-flaws and all! I remember watching a celebrity and his wife talking about marriage many years ago. They were a Christian couple. The wife said she wanted her husband to be different and support their relationship the way she wanted it to be. One day the idea occurred to her, she would be the person she wanted her spouse to be with a loving example everyday. By using her own flaws and strengths she changed the marriage. It is important to acknowledge and try to change your weaknesses-flaws. To become a better person! But a better person for whom? Do it for yourself! Who is to say? You are quite good just the way you are! Do you recognize your flaws? Do you love yourself anyway? We all want to be the best we can be-flaws and all!

TIME

Everyone has 24 hours in a day. How often do we hear- I do not have enough time! Some people just get more done in a day but often hear from others- I would do that if only I had the time. Time flies when you're having fun! Time definitely does not fly when sitting in a dentist's chair for a cleaning! The game was saved in the nick of time! Yes just before the clock ran out! Jim Croce's Time in a Bottle song was somewhat ironic due to his untimely death. Time marches on! That movie, book, event was a waste of time! How many times do I have to tell you not to do that is a favourite line of every mother! Where did the time go when we speak about aging! Time heals all wounds- usually if you have good stitches and remember to clean the wound! Time to get up! Time to go to bed! Time to eat lunch! Work's over- time to go home. That party- wasn't it a good time! Come by any time! Oh it's late, time to finish! By the way do you know what time it is? My husband always says- it's howdie dowdie time! A moment in time is every snapshot's message! A time to laugh and a time to cry comes from the Bible! What comes to mind when you hear the word time?

SAYING HELLO

To 2011 as our new year begins. May everyone continue to enjoy the things in their lives that bring meaning and purpose. And do not forget to dream. Your dreams- always have dreams! Dreams can help us to set goals or steps for a more meaningful life. Even if every dream is not accomplished, the journey along the way can bring unexpected joys or accomplishments. My husband had a dream of building his own house- that dream has been our home for almost 24 years! It was never my dream but I have benefitted from his. Do you have dreams! If so what are you doing to try to fulfill them? May 2011 bring you closer to them.
