IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE-WELL I MEAN MY GARDEN

Often thought of as a tough neighbourhood. Well the jungle refers to my garden. It is a jungle.
The plants are growing tall. I let some of the natural wild flowers just bloom and grown. The old vegetable garden is full of everything. I have been putting the compost items there hoping some renegade seeds will sprout something. You know when you find a squash growing in a flower bed. Well I want the old veggie garden to do that. Perhaps it is wishful thinking.
I try to keep the front yard neat as I can. Then you come through the gate and bam the jungle is there.
Once some spring flowers have finished in my paths like those precious blue forget -me-nots, I am going to use my weed whacker and cut off the foliage. Then I will spray the paths with some weed wipe out. I used to spray the whole plant then it would kill the top leaves but not kill the plant.
I have learned. Too hard to try to hand pick thousands of little growth plants.
Besides I let the garden be wild last year. Guess what? Lots of different butterflies and birds visited.
So if I am tired of trying to get some order, the jungle it will be.
Of course the pots on the porch are okay.

GETTING THROUGH ADVERSITY

The old phrase one day at a time is so relevant when faced with life's crisises. Sometimes being in the trenches blocks the light. It can seem dark and hopeless.
Then just get through the day. Promise yourself you can do it. One more day.
Get up the next morning with optimism you can make it. Put two feet on the floor then take one step at a time. The day will give what it will give.
Be prepared to do what can be done. Try not to focus on the negative. Okay to feel sad or mad. But then just continue to fight and do what you can.
Everyone faces adversity from time to time. Just remember other times where you have coped and survived.

BARB'S GENEALOGY TIDBITS- WORK CONTINUES ON THE BALL POINT STORY

Several essays on the family property on Lake Scugog- Ball Point Mariposa Township have been written on my blog.
I have not put the Introduction nor the misc facts on this blog yet. I am continuing to work on the mountain of notes and references from years of work.
The trouble with genealogical notes is they are like little treasures. It is hard to throw out duplicates or neatly written notes.
So the process has been slower than it should be.They represent research and a creative process of finding the right information.
Sometimes I wish I had decided to get a Masters in history as I have enough information for a good thesis. Alas I did not.
So I want to focus on finishing the story. I do have lots of pictures to incorporate into any post.
June may be the month to get it done.
Stay tuned for more of my writing.

SOME CRAFT PROJECTS READY FOR MARKET

I like to make my knitted and crocheted items without finishing them. Then I will sit down and blitz sewing the ends and finishing the projects.
Using my misc. wool I made 6 hats, 5 scarves and 4 blankets. The blankets were medium size not for a full bed. But ideal for a crib.
It feels good to have that little pile finished and ready for market or as gifts. I never know where my items will go but it is always good to have an available stash.
Currently I am working on a knitted top for me and pieces for a larger bed comforter.
Always good to keep one's hands busy.

A TRIP TO THE GREENHOUSE

Adolph's cousins have run their greenhouses Valley View Gardens for over 50 years. A trip there to buy some house plants was a fun day for me.

Valley View Gardens

Rows and rows of annuals, perennials and lots of house plants.

I loved the cactus display so bought several for home.
I have two new plants for various rooms.

Rita one of Adolph's cousins gave him a tomato plant for the porch.
He can see it from his chair in the family room. He literally will be able to watch his tomaotes grow.

A MEMORIAL PEAR TREE

When we bought our property from our mother Concetta in 1986, it came with a pear tree. Pears were her favourite fruit so she had two trees in her yard.
I love trees so of course it would stay. Even when she passed away in 1998, I brought her some pears from her tree.
So seeing all the beautiful blossoms this year it seems it is a reminder of her.

It is visible from the kitchen and family room. Something for Adolph to enjoy. And maybe there will be lots of pears to eat.

MAY WITH ITS BLOSSOMS AND FOR SOME ALLERGIES

As I drive or walk and admire the trees in their spring green and the flowers, I am in heaven. Then those that have allergies they are in hell!!
A different perspective! So how to balance both. There are some good medications and remedies for those with allergies so can be used.
Many people do not know until later in life they actually have environmental allergies. I have some to touching certain bushes so wear gloves and long sleeves. But thankfully not when I breathe.
So do you have allergies? What do you do to help with them?
My daughter posted on her blog about such a subject.
House of Kerrs
She had some interesting responses and help for her allergies.

BARB'S BUTTER TART ADVENTURE- FIRST STOP NIAGARA ON THE LAKE

I love the two Butter tart tours in Ontario- Wellington Trail and Kawartha Tour. I made a decision that wherever I go this summer I would buy butter tarts. So on a day trip to Niagara on the Lake and visiting wineries I had the opportunity to buy some tarts.

A stop at Niagara Home Bakery on Queen Street was a must.
Bought the tarts and some apple strudel.

Although there are several varieties, I decided on the ones with pecans.
Yummy. Even good for freezing to enjoy another day.
It does not mean I will not try the other two tours if the opportunities arise. But doing my own little independent one is rather fun too!!

TULIPS GALORE AT NIAGARA ON THE LAKE ON A CANADIAN SPRING DAY

What a fun day. Visiting several wineries for the Sip and Sizzle.
Then to Niagara on the Lake to walk around and have a bite to eat.
But the tulips caught my eye.

Pretty orange. Interesting how they appear when they are opened.

Beds of gorgeous!

Love the pink.

So many in a row!!
Don't you just adore tulips?? Only problem they do not last long enough for my liking.

A TRIP TO THE SIP AND SIZZLE IN NIAGARA ON THE LAKE

What a fun day to visit Niagara wine country.
A May event at the wineries. Sample some wine with a bite to eat. I went with my daughter Sonya.
She has written about it on her blog and facebook page.
House of Kerrs
The first stop was The Wayne Gretzky Estates. Lots of sport memorabilia. Wine, whiskey and beer.
We sampled a 2016 Shiraz Cabernet with Grilled lamb on a bun. Jim helped with the serving and we had a friendly chat. Lots of photo opportunities.

Wayne Gretzky Estates
Bought bottle of the rose. The clerk Rhonda was very friendly and attentive.
Walking around and some pictures outside then on to the next winery.
Trius just a short drive was next.
Sampled Beef Kofta with a nice Merlot.

Trius Winery and RestaurantBeautiful spring trees all in pink.
Fun signs for pictures.

So I bought another rose wine, an appetizer and a summer hat.

So on to the next winery
Pillitteri Estates winery was another stop. We had done the full tour there last year so really went for the food. Lemon Chicken soulvaki with cucumber and yogurt with a Reisling Dry.
Pillitteri Estates Winery
Took our wine outside. Some photos with my new summer hat.

One more before heading to town.
Stratus Wines.
Stratus Winery

WHAT DOES A CAREGIVER REALLY NEED TO CONTINUE

Firstly who is a caregiver. A mother. A father. A daughter caring for a loved one. A son caring for a loved one. A wife caring for a spouse. A husband caring for a spouse. Any family member or friend caring for someone. Sometimes a paid job. The job is easier. You shift off. A family caregiver can not shift off. 24/7. The person can be any age.

Caring for someone takes love, patience and sometimes lack of sleep. It is relentless. Tasks need to be done. Over and over again. Often there is a real boredom factor. Many of the tasks are boring.

Often and usually there is no thank you. There is an expectation that the jobs will be done and the way the person wants them.

So how to help a caregiver. Relief. Time off. Time away. A day out. An evening out. Someone to come to the home. Someone to take the person out. A day trip. A breakfast out. An ice cream. A check in by phone, email or text. Those little moments help.

Company. Talking and sharing. Yes a treat. Come for a meal and bring some of it. Spend time with the person. Bring something social to them. Watch sports or movies or shows together. Family times. Laughter really helps. The situation is serious enough so some fun. Some levity.

No patronizing. No words of how strong the caregiver is. There is no strength but just perseverance. A duty. A responsibility. And sometimes resentment. Sometimes peace for doing the right thing. Often just numb to be able to continue. Knowing and acknowledging what has been done already rather than advice on what to do.

Remember caregivers can be sad too. Seeing someone they love unwell tugs at the heart. If a young child, hope as she/he grows the demands will diminish. If a sick person, knowing the demands will increase.

Caring is tough. Caring is love. Caring takes energy and time. Caring is repetitive. It is a one way street. The person may or may not give back.

Caregivers are everywhere. So if you are one and see one, share, give a hug and give some real acknowledgement. If you were a caregiver and your person is no longer here, it is not a contest. Give support to the caregiver giving the care now and not compare to what you did. Your journey is over. The caregiver is in the trenches now and does not need your history lesson.

Caregivers.

TULIPS IN A CANADIAN SPRING GARDEN 2019

The variety of spring tulips seems almost endless. I love the garden with its array of flowers blooming. My only regret is tulips just do not last long enough.
Ottawa with its tulip festival is a must for every Canadian. Although I have seen it more than once, I plan to make another trip to our capital again in my lifetime.

Walk along any street and see the beauty in the gardens.

Single or in groups.

I love the colours.

Oh those 150 Canada special tulips that adorned the garden.

Well perhaps it is time to wander around the neighbourhood looking for more.
