I follow a newsletter by Maria Popova called " brainpickings".
newsletter@brainpickings.org
Always an interesting read and very intellectual with readings and notes and quotes from many people throughout history.
The theme last Sunday July 14, 2019 was about Trees. How trees communicate. How trees are mentioned by poets and writers.
What fascinated me was the new knowledge for me of an amazing Canadian scientist, ecologist, forester-
Dr. Suzanne Simard from the University of British Columbia. Conducting work and research for over 30 years. Well it is all new to me.
My brother Ron was a working forester in Ontario for over 30 years and in his retirement still my go to expert about trees.
There are two films in Maria's post. From TED-ED and on You Tube.
The Secret Language of Trees by one of Dr. Simard's doctoral students.
Then a You Tube talk by Dr. Simard- How trees talk to each other. Wonderful. Interesting. Thought Provoking.
The underground world of trees!
Watch both if you can and learn another fascinating view of the natural world.
Maria also mentioned the work of Peter Wohlleben. So using some Indigo gift cards, I found his book- the Hidden Life of Trees. Dr. Simard is quoted in his book. On my summer reading list now.
Trees are a life force on our earth. So plant a tree when you can. Plant species that complement each other. Or better yet consult an expert on what grows well together.
We are too caught up in the lives of celebrities. The people doing real work for humanity are within our boundaries.
So what trees do you have on your property? What plants do you grown! Do you include a variety of species?
