TIRED OF COVID-JUST HANG IN THERE

With some restrictions being lifted today in Ontario it can be seen as a good sign.

But we have been down this road previously.

It seemed like things were getting better then a turn for the worse.

Omicron is subsiding. But that little knot in the neck asks is there something else around the corner.

Then we are told we have to learn to live with Covid.

Duh!!

What have we been doing the last two years??

Yes I know what is meant!!

We live with other viruses. So if an annual booster like the flu shot it is doable.

February is here so the beginning of the end of winter is approaching. Still trying to be outside and getting some fresh air every day.

How are you coping? Are you sick of covid?

JANUARY BAKING-AROMA IN THE HOME

Cold weather is conducive for baking and oven meals.

It helps the soul to smell the aroma of homemade food.

Banana loaves use up the rotting bananas and can be shared with family.

Slow cooker meals that simmer all day. Easy for the cook not to be stirring pots on the stove.

The aroma in the home sure lifts the mood!!

What is your favourite food to make in the winter?

JANUARY ENDING-DID YOU ACCOMPLISH YOUR GOALS FOR THE MONTH

 I didn't.

I got lots of things done.

Like shoveling the driveway.

Finished some craft projects. Several knit and crochet items needed to be finished, ie sewing in the ends.

I started a genealogy article. I found myself lost in the information and wanting to organize it.

Anniversary and birthday celebrations were fun.

One grandchild sleepover.

Tried skating again. It is like I was three years old all over again.

Watched a new movie on Prime. Looking forward to theatre movie again.

Could not go to a restaurant but looking forward to dinner or lunch out soon.

All my family have had their booster shots which is good from a health perspective.

Some corners of the house have been organized and items decluttered.

However I am always ambitious with a new year wanting to get a fresh start on so many areas of my life.

Well maybe February will bring some completion of areas of my life.

Like reading those books I started and put down before Christmas.

How about you? How was your January?

LIFE IS LIKE A TRAY OF GOODIES

Eat your dinner and you can have dessert was the way I was raisied.

So with my girls I rarely had dessert. It was difficult enough planning what to have for dinner after a busy work day.

But a tower of sweets is one of the rewards in life.

Brownie or a cookie or a piece of torrone or little chocolates.

Goodies come in many varieties.

Choice makes it interesting.

Like the sweet times in life.

ONE PERSON'S HOLOCAUST STORY-CHECK OUT LILY EBERT

Flipping the dial on a Saturday night I came across a documentary on the Holocaust.

So poignant with the Truckers Convoy that had antisemitic overtones in Ottawa on Saturday January 29 2022.

Lily Ebert an Auschwitz Birkenau survivor.

Her greatgrandson has her on a Tik Tok profile sharing her life and story.

It is the first time I am thrilled to try to follow her on Tik Tok.

Using modern social media to make sure we never forget.

Her story is the story of extreme oppression and loss. And survival and having a wonderful life.

I would suggest for people to find it and view this remarkable person.

She settled in England after World War Two.

A beautiful human being with love and compassion for all.

THE GREAT VACCINE DIVIDE! ONLY IN CANADA THEY SAY!!

I saw an interesting comment on Twitter about how not being able to go in a restaurant if unvaccinated is an affront on one's freedom.

The Truck convoy which has become more than unvaccinated truckers but an excuse for many others to use the event for their own political extreme values.

Then yesterday being International Holocaust Remembrance Day. And yes this whole debate has been compared shamefully to it.

I was called Pro Nazi on one twitter field for standing up for vaccines. Another guy said Stalin would love me.

Because I believe in Public Health protocols.

The same people do not realize that every time a cell phone is used or a car is driven or one walks into a store there are cameras watching us.

Use your credit card.

Present you Health Card for medical services.

To travel to other countries a Passport and sometimes with a Visa for that country.

Well you get the picture.

Trolls are always looking for a way to criticize.

Like most Canadians, the silent majority we are just tired of all the nonsense debate. We would like to be through Covid safely and move on with our lives.

I like responsible law and order. I respect the laws of the land. Anyone can decide to try to change the laws through Parliament and other channels. Laws are a reflection of the society around them. Laws evolve.

Laws keep us safe.

Other generations fought wars to protect our Freedom. So the freedom of the unvaccinated comes with consequences.

Like so many people I am looking forward to the Endemic. I am willing to live with the fact covid will be around for a long time. But like other diseases with proper vaccines they are no longer a threat.

Smallpox. Measles. Polio. To name a few. Vaccines put them at bay.

What are you thoughts? Are you just tired of all the debate? Do you just want to read a book with your favourite beverage at your side? Do you want a Canadian walk in the snow?

INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY 2022

Important to stop and reflect on this travesty in history.

Time to reassure that it will never happen again.

For those during this covid crisis who tend to equate vaccination mandates to the Holocaust shame on you.

Public Health policy that saves lives has nothing to do with the Holocaust.

It is a dishonour to all people of Jewish origin for anyone to use the Holocaust like this.

Remember them. Say their names. Never again.

FROZEN JEANS FUN

So I saw a clip on Your Morning January 25th about freezing jeans and other clothing and it would stand up in the cold.

So for fun to see if it would work, I tried.

Got two pair of jeans from my closet.

My pants on the floor. Puff out the bottoms. Soaked them in a bucket thoroughly.

Hung them to freeze on my mailbox with a bucket underneath to catch any water that would drip.
After a few hours they were frozen stiff.
One pair stood up quite well.
The second pair did not have the bottom puffed out enough.

So I just leaned them against the wall.

For fun outdoor parties the stand up clothes would be a fun decoration, wouldn't it?

So what do you think? Is it whimsical or a little kooky?

I sent a text to my daughters and grandchildren for fun. I wanted them to have a laugh. Well they did.

Humour on a cold January day.

MENTAL HEALTH AND BELL LET'S TALK DAY

One day does not change everything about Mental Health.

But designating a day to talk about it and support a good cause is a wonderful thing.

Covid has brought mental health issues to the forefront.

Many people that did not acknowledge any mental health concerns were suddenly faced with issues of loneliness, illness. anxiety, sudden death from covid and the effects of grief.

So post and help with the cause of Bell Let's Talk.

NOT JUST TIRED OF COVID BUT USELESS COVID PROTESTS

 Unmasked.

Unvaxxed.

They gather to protest good public health measures.

They abuse Health Care Professionals for doing great heroic work.

The anti group. Anti this and Anti that.

Believing in misinformation. The extreme right has used this Covid crisis to advance their agenda.

A Trucker convoy now going across the country.

I am not just tired of Covid but just tired of useless protests.

The same anti group would rush to the hospital for care when sick. And well they would receive good care. And probably if possible have their life saved.

Yes we have free speech. Yes we have the right to protest.

Well folks I have the right to state my view too.

Many silent majority Canadians are just too tired to tell you how they feel.

Yes I am tired but not too tired to say what I feel too.

How about you? Are you tired of the useless covid protests?

WINTER BLUES ARE HARD TO TAKE

Winter can be tough enough for so many people.

With the Covid restrictions winter blues have been exacerbated to an extreme.

Staying home becomes boring.

Being able to go out to simple events are so restricted.

Zoom meetings help with some interaction with others in whatever group it is. Time to chat and laugh.

Yes laughter is such an important thing for all of us.

So a short outdoor walk with some fresh air always helps.

What are you doing to beat the winter blues?

SNOW AND MORE SNOW

Lots of snow is part of the winters in Canada.

The snow storm of the decade last Monday. Some outdoor pics from the street with a car stuck in snow.

The back porch showing how much snow really fell.

Living down the road from the Library where there is a decent hill for sledding, I hear the squeals of children using it.

Covid has made children and families spend more time in the outdoors.

How about you? How do you embrace winter?

Need to decide what to wear.

Oh yeah it's my birthday tomorrow.

Turning 72. Son-in-law turning 45.

Balloons!

And lots of cake!!

BARB'S GENEALOGY TIDBITS-ARTISTIC DOILIES BY CARRIE READ NEE BAKER VAUGHAN ONTARIO

Sometimes we have items in our possession that resonate artistic ability.

During my youth I attended Carville United Church- Bathurst and Carville ( now Rutherford Road) on the Vaughan side of Bathurst.

The United Church women would meet, fund raise and plan church activities. Like the Strawberry Festival, Turkey dinner around Thanksgiving and a bazaar at Christmas.

The group at Carville also made quilts to be sold as a fund raiser. The leader of the quilting bees was Carrie Read. A phenomenal quilter. She would lead the group in finishing a quilt for a community member at a fee.

Carrie was also knit and crocheted many items. Growing up in Vaughan, she was used to hard work on the farm she had with her husband.

Carrie was born Caroline Ethel Baker in 1898 living in York South,

From the 1911 Census, Caroline Baker was 12 born August 1898  in the province of Ontario. Ethic origin German,

York South    District Number 138

Sub-District Name York  Sub-District Number 5 Ward 1

Family Number :18  Page Number:2  Microfilm: T-20412

She married Adam Read June 14, 1919 in York Ontario.

Having 3 sons and 1 daughter Carrie lived a hard working life at home and on the farm.

Both Carrie and Adam are buried in the Carville United Church cemetery on Rutherford Road Vaughan just west of Bathurst Street.

I was given several crocheted doilies as Shower and Wedding gifts when I married May 15, 1971. I used them a little in my early marriage. However over time they were stored away.

The work is so beautiful. I loved the colour purple so Carrie made some purple ones for me.

The intricate flowers around the edge are so uniform and well done.

Trying to find a new home for them is a goal. I want to donate them to someone or a group that would appreciate the artistic skills of a crafter.

NANA SAYS STAY SAFE ON THIS WINTER SNOW DAY

Okay back to school was thwarted by the winter blizzard raging right now in Southern Ontario.

So staying home is the best thing for anyone that can.

It would be hard to build a snowman as it is quite poor visibility.

As a Nana I am glad the kids can be home safely. Disappointed that they all wanted to be back in school.

But one more day is okay.

The plan is back to school with all Covid safey protocols in place. So hopefully it will be tomorrow for the kids back to school.

Stay safe everyone!

Staying off the roads helps our first responders deal with less emergencies!!

THE COLD OF WINTER GIVES TIME FOR INDOOR EXERCISE TOO

Outdoor activities are good for the soul. But if bitterly cold time to spend indoors doing some fun activities.

Many people have been binge TV watching. Okay for some.

Finding ways to be active indoors is good too.

Walking around the house or condo. When I lived in an apartment building there was an older gentleman that used to walk the 15 floors he would go up a flight and walk that floor then go up another flight and walk that floor etc.

Houses with more than one floor give the opportunity to go up and down stairs. Good workout.

Weights.

Exercise equipment.

Yoga on a carpet or yoga mat.

Dancing to music.

Stationary exercises that work the body.

Sitting apparently is the new smoking. So getting up and moving every few hours or more is a good thing.

And it lessens the boredom of just sitting and watching TV or reading or whatever.

Stimulates the mind and body.

So now for me to get going and take my own advice.

What do you do for indoor exercise?

GRIEF IS A LONG JOURNERY

I love it when people tell others you need to move on.

Not.

The new buzz words are to move forward. aT your own pace.

You never stop loving the person you lost. But you do learn to live without the person reluctantly!!

Narrative Therapy tells us to restory the story.

Your narrative with the person changes. But the person is still part of your narrative.

The Canadian office for Narrative Therapy is Ajax. Check them out.

Finding ways to honour the person.

There are no real stages in grief. Time heals in various ways. The grief is not as raw.

But a new event can trigger the thoughts and it does feel like yesterday sometimes.

So the best advice. You will always miss the person. Depending on the relationship- whether child, mother, father, husband, friend, sister, brother!

Pictures help. Stories help. Talking about the person helps.

Another piece of advice. It is your grief journey. No one can tell you how to do it.

Are you missing someone today? Are you struggling with grief?

SMALL CRAFT PROJECTS KEEP MY HANDS BUSY

Everyone who knits and crochets has little balls left over from projects.

What to do with them?

So making hats and scarves are always ongoing using them.

Blankets are fun too. But trying to use up small balls is hard.

So a current project is making a crocheted blanket with all these small balls.

I am just using a single crochet stitch. No pattern. Nothing fancy!

In the crazy quilt style. Starting in the middle and going in one direction. Then going along each edge. Then going along the longer edges. It is coming together nicely.

And using up lots of little balls.

It is easy to work on this project. Very simple. No brainer. No pattern.

What I like the most is the fact I am not organizing and moving little balls of wool to somewhere else in my craft room.

Of course when it is finished it will go into my bin of stashed projects!

JANUARY ORGANIZING IS GOOD FOR MENTAL HEALTH

With Covid stay at home as much as possible orders, the Artic blast, the January blahs and blues, I have found organizing many clutter corners good for my mental health.

My Secretary desk area was messy. So using little organizing plastic envelopes I used two plastic clear boxes. One for the tickets, folders, and items from events attended by Adolph and me and the other for sports, outside memorabilia that may one day be a collectible. Extras of these items I put in the grandchildren memory boxes. Clear boxes are best because it easy to see what is in the box.

Some items were just garbage so into the recycling bins.

Then my computer desk area. Used little organizing items to put the various projects.

The family history stories in one, the charts to be used for the pedigree lines, the various items obtained from research to use in the stories- for example a picture of the school my mother attended and semi completed family stories.

I put my Widow Series short stories where I can find them. My Memories of series all together.

Until a few days ago, just piles on my work table that is now clear and functional to spread out information if I need to do it.

I still have to rewrite my lists of online sites with passwords that grows. Honestly I find myself using many sites as a guest because always trying to find the username and password is cumbersome.

If I order an item from a food site, once or twice a year it is hard to relocate the password so keeping a well organized list does save time. But under my list right now are notes of new ones added in the last two years. So January is a good time to tackle this boring task, right?

It seems trite but when I look at an organized area it gives me energy to tackle another one.

A big area is my laundry room. I have been shortlisting all the tools, screws and handyman or I guess handywoman items from a cupboard outside the laundry room. The items are piled on a table for easy viewing. Right now messy viewing.

Some items may be good to sell at some point.

So why good for my Mental Health? By tackling these small areas it is gearing me up to tackle the larger areas of my life.

So January bring on the organizing!!

BARB'S GENEALOGY TIDBITS-JANUARY IS A MONTH TO CONTINUE GENEALOGY PURSUITS

Having organized my computer work area, I am now ready to continue to pursue genealogical research and writing.

Working on Adolph's story with pictures and documentation has taken longer than anticipated the last few months.

I have Lanni and Matrundola lines- Concetta Matrundola-Di Mambro- Adolph's Mom- to put on pedigree charts to make it easier for my children and grandchildren to learn.

Collecting and organizing pictures into family histories has been a good chore over the last few months.

So one picture scanned can be put into many family stories.

The further back one goes the fewer pictures and documentation. The more recent stories include so many. The decision what to include and what not to include.

For example for Adolph, I included a collage of family pictures from the 40th anniversary album I compiled for the girls. I also put it in my story.

An example of the four of us. It will be important to put the dates like the years attached to the pages.

What is useful about this collage is the fact it has been used in more than one location.

Doing work once that can be used over and over in other projects as they arise so to speak.

When I look at the scant photos of older generations I realize how lucky we are to have the opportunity to record so much of our lives in photos, videos, and other social media.

What to do next? Upload the 40th anniversary album and put on Evernote.

I love researching on Family Search and Find my Past.

There are several webinars coming up this month, February and March. Looking at the handouts of previous webinars has given me ideas of what to search in those mentioned search engines.

Rather than just inserting a name to look at journals, databases of areas where our ancestors lived. I have found interesting tidbits of information.

Some of the social tidbits will be included in stories I am writing on my family lines. Little useful insights into their lives.

Winter downtime from outdoor work other than shoveling snow has always been a great opportunity to record, write, research and connect with others who are searching.

Hopefully more stories to come on Barb's Genealogy Tidbits.

MAKING THE MOST OF JANUARY LOCKDOWN SCENARIO

I know.

We are not locked down. It just feels that way.

Told everyone will get Omicron. Well I don't buy it.

So staying home as much as possible. Only seeing immediate family.

Often with masks. Washing hands. Distancing.

We all know the drill by now.

So I am treating January like a usual January.

Cold. Indoor activities. Sort projects. Organize. Watch movies. Connect with people by phone, text and maybe a real letter or two.

Also trying to use up the food I have in the house. I would rather order in or do curb side pickup.

I wrote letters the beginning of the pandemic March 2020.

I am trying very hard to be positive.

However know of another death of someone who would not be vaccinated and died from Covid.

The number that I know about is mounting.

Vaccinated can still get sick from covid but usually does not lead to death.

So trying very hard not to be negative. But I just think now- accept the consequences of your actions. No vaccine and death seems so stupid.

Adolph was judged for being a smoker. So I find myself needing not to judge. Someone who is loved has died.

I am just so glad my family is sensible and vaccinated. The little ones will get their second dose soon. And the older family members are slowly getting their third dose.

So and so again. The never ending Covid story.

How about you? How are you handling the Covid crisis? Are you in denial and think it is a hoax? Are you vaccinated? Are you just tired of the whole thing?

NANA SAYS ALL I CAN GIVE IS LOVE AND SUPPORT TO ALL YOU PARENTS

 Nothing can be said.

Maybe a dream catcher to take away the nightmare.

Virtual learning really sucks for everyone.

For the students.

For the teachers.

But especially for the parents who are told to pivot.

How much bloody pivoting can they do?

Working from home with children schooled from home is more than tough.

Sure they have done it previously.

I want to find the right messages to say to my daughters and families.

Phony positivity really does not work.

Perhaps instead of a family hug. Each member gets to scream and say I do not want to take this anymore!! That quote from the movie!!

So all I can give is love and support to all the parents out there!! I can not honestly say I know what you are feeling! I did not have to work through a pandemic with children.

So I try to send friendly little texts to the grandchildren. Let them know I love them.

So love, support, maybe some cookies and a good scream will help!!

JANUARY BLUES HAPPENING YET??

January has some good points- An anniversary, family birthdays!

The time spent at home can be long and boring.

So with so many current restrictions finding things to do socially become tedious.

Oh yeah! Webinars and Zoom meetings preavail

Making phone calls to family and friends.

But I am concerned about my grandchildren and back to virtual learning. A real bummer for everyone.

So off to a good start. Cleaned my Secretary desk area and organized the variety of items I have.

The coins will be divided between my six. I figure by the time they look in their memory boxed some of the coins may be worth money.

I have a variety of sports memorabilia that may be of interest to them.

So with a radio playing on each floor I stay connected to the outside world. And well I can dance like no one is watching. Because no one is watching!!

SUNSHINE ON A WINTER DAY

No matter how cold it becomes when the sun is shining the day is definitely brighter.

Also parking a car with snow or ice in the sun allows the sun to melt it. No scraping.

Sometimes I just take a chair and sit by my sliding doors in the Family Room to catch some rays.

If I close my eyes and feel the heat I can pretend I am on a beach somewhere warm.

It is the same sun!!

For me right now I am trying to feel as many positive vibes as I can.

Energy is needed to keep going in life. Positive energy just makes it better.

So believing that life will turn a corner keeps my life positive.

So feeling the sun. Seeing the sunshine. Acknowledging it effects on us keeps the day brighter.

How about you? Does the sunshine help you get through the day?

2022 OFF TO AN INTERESTING START

 Puttering.

Cleaning.

Sorting.

Setting some January goals that allow being home and safe from the ravages of Covid.

Yes the variant is milder if vaccinated. But folks I still do not want to get it. Sucks if you do.

My priorities are my family bubbles.

More time with the grandchildren safely.

The community groups will give me some areas of support.

I have not submitted photos to an online site for some time. So it is a goal to take some creative photos to send.

So small manageable areas to give some joy.

And perhaps more fun in the snow.
