CAN THINGS GET ANY WORSE? MAYBE

A few years ago when going through a tough time and I thought it could not get any worse, someone said to me don't bet on it. You can hit the floor then someone could kick the floor out from under you.
Ouch!
It made me feel like I better be thankful I only had the problems I had as it could get worse. Well I did not feel thankful for my problems, I just wanted to get through them.
Even if the floor can be kicked out, don't tell that to someone going through a hard time.
I always love when someone has a problem and say well my friend told me about someone who has it worse. Really. Whatever problem a person has, it is huge to them. Some people handle things better than others. Even if a person's problems seems small to you, it may be an accumulation of many problems over the last few days, months, years.
Don't belittle what someone is experiencing!!
Along with getting the floor kicked out, there can be a silver lining sometimes.
The Fall of 1984 is an example. My husband had 3 business partners. We went to a wedding of one his partners- Angelo's son. Three weeks later returning from Montreal for the Thanksgiving weekend- Angelo, his wife and other son were killed in an accident on 401 in front of the newlyweds travelling in the car behind them. 2 days later my husband was in one of his trucks and it caught on fire becoming completely gutted. He was okay. The same week one of his workers was in a bar fight, almost killed and ended up in a coma which lasted for several weeks, remaining in hospital. My husband and others needed to go to Montreal for the funeral. Of course lots of worries about it.
A bad week. Yes.
I belonged to a Board on a local agency. There was a fund raiser. 50/50 draw. I get a phone call on the Friday of that horrible week and guess what. Yes I won 800 plus dollars from the draw. I booked a trip for my husband and me for January with the money.
So life can be strange. In the bad times can be some good times or just good supports when needed.
Even if the floor is kicked out maybe there will be someone to catch you. Just saying!!

THE REAL TROUBLE WITH HEALTH CARE IN CANADA

We are so lucky to have good health care across Canada. Lots of competent professionals. The trouble with Health Care is everyone can have a different opinion.
Take this example. You go to ER and the doctor there makes a treatment plan. You get admitted and now the doctor on the floor has a new plan and may not consult the ER notes. If you stay more than a week you get a different doctor the second week. So ready to go home. Go see your Family Doctor. Well that doctor usually does not read the discharge notes from the hospital and may come up with a different plan or not understand how ill you have been.
Take example #2. You are in hospital. Depends whether the nurse has an 8 hour or 12 hour shift on how many nurses you will get in a day. There is supposed to be a shift report. But how often can your nurse say I did not have time to read your chart. Okay charts are now electronic and quite easy to read and there are summary charts. You may have liked the nurse on the last shift. But your new nurse may be in  a bad mood and expects you to cheer him/her up!! Can nurses nurse by mood and personality? Yup. There are standards of care but not always standards of mood.
Take example #3. Your child has special needs, concerns, illnesses. Each professional may have a different opinion. Try this. Try that. Did anyone ask you what has already been done? Or you are treated as if you have done nothing when you have been with this child 24/7 and through all the good and bad times.
Take example #4. Professionals of different professions often criticize or judge what another profession has done. If someone is not trained in that profession then can not tell someone how to do their job. Happens with Social Work. Everyone can think because they took a psychology course or two the expertise is the same. I often heard other disciplines question what the surgeon was planning. Really!! Not a surgeon so why would I question it. Why did they question it?
I could go on but communication and consistent treatment would really help. Each professional can give a different opinion but does need to look at what has been tried already.
Always remember the family member is part of the treatment team. Actually the most important part. Family members often have done a lot of care prior to any admission. They will continue after any discharge.
As a professional Social Worker, 2 of my basic questions were Is this normal for your loved one and what have you already done. For example, post surgery a patient could have confusion. Is this confusion new and normal for your loved one. Yes I read the chart. Informed the patient and family. Would only ask questions that had not been answered.
Treat the family member well. If the person talks about how the care is not consistent and often one person does not know what the other person had done. Does it happen? Yes too often!!
Trust me professionally and personally I have witnessed it way too often.
What are your thoughts and your experiences? It is always good to share.

BARB'S GENEALOGY TIDBITS- BALL POINT- THE HUNTING LODGE STORY

Ball Point on Lake Scugog is often referred as the little cape on the lake. Located in Mariposa Township, Victoria County now City of Kawartha Lakes, just north of Lake Ontario, it was settled in the early 1800s.  Home to ancestors Robert John Parkin and his wife Hannah Keeler along with their children since the 1840s, it had many uses over the years. As was customary, land was passed on to sons. My great-grandfather Charles William Parkin(s) inherited 1/3 of the cape.
The part on the Point that was owned by Charles, Barbara's paternal great-grandfather was very functional. Along with housing members in the house on the property at the tip, other people had uses for it.
Ball Point was used by duck hunters and fishermen in the summer/fall seasons in the early 1900s. Rooms were rented to them.

Although the pamphlet says Lodge, it was really the main house and some rooms that were used.
This pamphlet from that time remains in the family.
According to Parkin Alton- grandson of Charles- with Barbara Di Mambro, it was more of an idea of renting rooms to them. The property was also rented to the YMCA fro camping in the summer.
Although research has been done, no documentation has been found to date to verify that story.
Leona Parkin-Alton- Parkin's mother and Barbara's paternal grandmother- was well liked by the guests when she was a young girl. They would send her postcards thus she acquired quite a collection putting them in a special book.

A group of hunters after one session. Unidentified men in the picture. Not family.
Family members also enjoyed the wonderful fishing of the lake.
Here is Charles William with his-son-in-law Cortland Alton. It looks like a big Musky for which Lake Scugog is famous.
Parkin as a toddler with his Dad Cortland. Circa 1918.

Family and their catches.

Parkin with a 12 lb musky landed at Ball Point the summer of 1933.

Parkin and brother Jerry with a Pintail the Fall of 1933.

Parkin with a carp he shot the summer of 1933.
So Ball Point was strategically located to take advantage of the fishing and hunting in the area.
There were two duck boats at the Point.
The above picture is Parkin's first wife- May Ellis-Alton- during the 1940s. She poised for the picture in one of the duck boats- October 10, 1940. She was not a duck hunter.

Now the house and property are enjoyed by family for cottage vacations. No more renting of rooms.

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE

Do you want things to change for the better? Are you tired of the same old, same old? So be the change you want to see. Be the person that makes a good difference. Change can be for the worse that is not what is wanted. To have kindness. Be kind. To have tolerance. Be tolerant. To have a good community. Be a good member. Neighbour. Reach out to others when able. So what change do you want to see in this town, province, country, world? Can you be the change you want to see?

NANA SAYS WEAR PINK TODAY FOR KINDNESS

What started as an idea in Nova Scotia in 2007 to combat against bullying has involved into pink shirt day. A day to think kindness and anti-bullying. Unfortunately we have to teach not to bully. We have to teach tolerance.
But think just this week at an arena in Quebec a family of a black hockey player was bullied in the stands. Come on! It's 2019.
So helping our children to be aware. Think pink. Wear pink. Even Nana and Granpa are wearing pink today. Not going anywhere in this snowy weather but the thought is there.
Be kind. Everyone counts!!

A SWORD DOES NOT KNOW HOW STRONG IT CAN BE UNTIL FORGED IN FIRE

What are you facing today? Like a sword when life gives us adversity it is hard to know how strong we can be!
Being strong does not mean there is no grief. No tears. No anger. It is what we do with those feelings.
Just getting up sometimes and putting one foot in front of the other. Just carrying on!!
We all get tested!

LADY GAGA AND BRADLEY COOPER ROCKED AT THE OSCARS

So I really loved the film The Star is Born. I really love the Song Shallow.
But seeing Lady Gaga and Bradley perform so eloquently and watching the audience mesmerized was the highlight of the Oscars for me. Pure professionalism.
For me another Oscar performance of song does stand out. The Cat Ballou song at the Oscar show in 1966. Oh those Smothers Brothers- what a pair!

BOOMER BARBARA ROCKS RETIREMENT- 5 WAYS TO USE YOUR TREK TROLLEY

It used to be called a bundle buggy and was quite ugly. Now the modern trek trolley with the same purpose comes in a variety of colours and patterns. They are available at several locations. I bought my two trolleys at Kitchen Stuff Plus a few years ago during one of their sales for $10.00 each. Now they are usually $25.00. Mine are purple and tiger design.

1. You are going to your favourite Farmer's Market. Well fruit and vegetables can be very heavy if walking around alot. So put the heavy items like potatoes on the bottom and delicate fruit or eggs on the top. Easy to pull and get around. No sore arms from carrying all that wonderful produce.
Leaving St. Jacob's Market with our haul.
2. That famous Word on the Street fair in the Fall in Toronto where book lovers can purchase copious amounts of books. One year I used a carry on bag on wheels. But needing to open the zipper each time was a drag. The trolley is much easier. Just throw them in.
3. So you are a senior living in an apartment or condo. Pack all the groceries in the trolley then unload and pull to our unit.
4. A road trip. There are the big suitcases to take into the hotel. But what about all the little purchases in many bags. Throw them in the trolley. Easier to bring into your unit.
5. Of course, wanting to walk to the store. The trolley is a wonderful way to lug those purchases home as well as having some valuable exercise.

They can be many others occasions to use the trolley. Just use your imagination but make sure it is available in your car in case the opportunity arises.

HOW ARE YOUR FEBRUARY BLUES?

Being Canadian means having winter and finding ways to enjoy it. However there are many people who hate winter and barely tolerate it. Then they are those with depression. February is a tough month for those with mental health challenges. Reaching out to them and supporting them is paramount. February can be a bad month for suicide. So pay close attention to those in your life with an issue. Talking. Going out to eat. Bring treats. Pay attention.
If you are just having those mild February blues, perk yourself up by doing something. Get planning for summer. Organize your closet. Take some winter pictures. Have a winter get together. Take a walk. If able go for one of those southern vacations. If unable take advantage of more economically affordable local venues.
February is the month closer to Spring but still lots to enjoy. Turn the blues around and find things to do.
So what are you waiting for??

FAMILY DAY IN ONTARIO-2019

Yeah a Monday off for working people and especially parents. Being home over a long weekend just gives a little break to all. There is so much to do- indoors and outdoors for us in the GTA. With some more snow the hills and roads- I hear people are skiing on streets in Toronto- and trails. If unable to get to a resort, a simple walk in the snow is warranted.
Of course, movies. Saw that sweet film Upstart and it was enjoyable. One that I may want to see again or buy on a DVD.
For this Senior, looking forward to a visit from family for a couple of hours. Then just trying to decide what to have for dinner.
Being home is bittersweet as last year at this time dealing with a very stressful hospitalization of my spouse. So not complaining if not setting the world on fire. My world is just contently fine!!
Some organizing and writing underway that I will post at another time.
Happy Family Day everyone! For those in America- Happy President's Day!!

THE CANADIAN FLAG- 54 YEARS YOUNG

February 15, 1965 Canada had a new flag of its own. From the Red Ensign to the wonderful red and white Maple Leaf.
Whether depicted in a quilt or in big and small flags it come to me a wonderful symbol of our country.
However, I remember the debate well. The various versions of what the flag should be. The good old fashioned Canadian discussion that seemed to go on forever. Not everyone embraced the flag. As flags go, I think is quite cool. Or as the 1960s saying would go- Groovy!!
Do you like our flag?

NANA SAYS- HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING THE FAMILY DAY WEEKEND?

A winter bonus in Ontario to have another long weekend. Parents deserve a break. With all the snow there may be some outdoor activities locally that can be fun. Up the street from me there is a hill by the Library- Yonge and Major Mackenzie Drive. I love watching the children sledding down this hill. Simple old fashioned fun.
Since most stores are closed on Monday, a real opportunity to do something other than shopping!! Okay there is always online shopping. But taking the children somewhere other than a Mall.
Or there can be a PJ weekend. Enjoying the indoor routines differently. Board games. Crafts. Sorting winter to spring clothes. Yes get the children involved at a young age with household duties.
If able to get away to a lodge or even the Niagara area with its activities can make the weekend a short getaway for all.
If parents need some time together, don't forget the grandparents for a few hours or a sleepover to give a break. Cousin time together helps too. So one couple can be relieved while the other couple goes out. Then trade!
With the winter weather and all the havoc it has given the last week, less may be more. So some home cooked meals or those wonderful meals to your door that you make with all the ingredients ready for you to cook.
The wonderful movie theatre is always a good quick outing for families. Now with some where a reservation can be made makes it even more enjoyable.
For this Nana, I am here and willing to help. It is not work when time is spent with grandchildren.

BOOMER BARBARA ROCKS RETIREMENT- SOME USE OF MY WOOL RESOURCES

Resigning oneself to living on a fixed income takes some ingenuity. So a previous post described using the resources at hand. Almost like my parents' generation that grew up through the depression.
So attacking the odds and ends of my yarn stash was a good beginning.
The pink and blue small balls of wool have created two little hats and a scarf in process. Two shades of pink wool has become a nice baby blanket. The multi coloured wool is a 10 stitch afghan stitch to use in a crazy quilt style blanket for the master bedroom that is in the works. I have used small balls of purple and green that match well with the coral centre.
The yellow hat for a young child was two balls of yellow while the purple and green child blankets used more scraps of wool.
I find that watching TV with my husband allows the time in the day and night to work on these projects. Not more than a couple of hours daily. The feeling of making something useful from my bag of misc balls of yarn gives a good sense of accomplishment. Plus making room in my craft room.
My knitted and crocheted stash is growing. So sell, donate or give as a gift gives this Senior some options in frugal living. Always looking for a place to sell them too!!

PREPARING FOR STORMY WEATHER IN CANADA

Flashlights. Batteries. Candles-I use LED ones now. Lots of water and blankets handy. Stay home if one can.
Stocked up on bottled water. Have milk. Oxygen tanks are ready.
I find the thinking about the weather sometimes worse than what happens.
My dear son-in-law showed me how to use my small snowblower. I can shovel the driveway well with my push shovel. I try not to lift the snow as it does put more of a strain on my body. Heart attacks are common after intense snow shovelling.
I will prepare some food. Have the cell phones charged.
Hope my children and grandchildren are safe.
Are you ready for the stormy weather?

BOOMER BARBARA ROCKS RETIREMENT- 5 WAYS TO USE YOUR RESOURCES AT HAND

Retirement brings a new thinking of using, buying and budgeting. Most seniors have stuff. Often households full of stuff. But can that stuff be useful resources. Of course.

1. Makeup, cosmetics, creams. Many seniors buy those products or are given as gifts.I like the Clinique line and often have many samples from the specials I buy every few months. Instead of buying new, look over all the makeup and products. I rediscovered those multi-packs given as gifts to have several shades of blush, gloss and eye shadow that I could use. Now that I do not work outside the home I don't need small sizes to fit a makeup bag. I can leave the big sampler available on a counter.

2. Are you a crafter? Do you have wool and material and other craft items available? Rather than buy new look over all the available stash and make new products. I went through my misc bag of wool. Several blankets, hats and scarves later either crocheted or knitted I have new items to sell, donate or use as gifts. All from balls that I thought were no longer useful. Now to tackle the material for some quilted and sewed items. Yes the little scraps left over can be used when the grandchildren come over and we can use them in crafts.

3. Your closet is full of clothes. Review and renew your look with items worn very little. No need to throw everything out or give away. An older cardigan can be matched with a new blouse or top. Be aware of styles. As we live longer we know skirts go long, go short or below the knee and back again. Styles recycle all the time. So are there items that can be used again to make that fashion statement. Just because you are a senior does not mean you can not be fashionable. So go to the back of your closet now!!

4. Books. Read your books. But are you swimming in them. Do you have friends or relatives that love to read too? What about a book swap!! Do you have books just sitting on your shelves that will help with those writing projects? Yes so much information is available on line but often summarized! Having a book with an index for a family history article for example is much easier to access than going back and forth to websites or printing! The book is there so can be used over and over again. When the project is finished the book goes back on the shelf. Perhaps reading a favourite book again is not a bad idea. For saving on paying for books. Well there is that great resource called a Library. Also books sales. Like church bazaar often have an used book table. Garage sales may have some too.

5. Regifting is not a dirty word. We all have new items that are not used. Or received a gift that was not our favourite.  From those bonus items from a makeup company, how many makeup bags do we need? So at Christmas for those young ladies I have given the new unused bags full of some girl items as gifts. Gift cards can be used for us or to buy a gift for someone else. Having a potential use of them does help with the family budget. Use them. A movie pass means an opportunity to go out and see a movie.

So with a home full of resources, these are just 5 ways to use them. Of course this Senior is thinking and will probably return with some more ideas.

BARB'S GENEALOGY TIDBITS-GENEALOGY HELPED BY TV SHOWS

Doing genealogy can seem like a lonely journey. Watching Webinars. Joining facebook groups. Researching whenever possible.
I watched the Finding Your Roots TV show on PBS with Henry Louis Gates Jr. as the moderator. Two celebrities were able to discover their roots.
Michael Strahan and S.Epatha Merkerson were showcased. As people who descended from slaves it was interesting how the paper trail and the DNA helped with their stories.
When Ms. Merkerson was given the name of a slave ancestor, she was so overwhelmed. She stated she had just thought they were nameless people but to have a real name for a real person was so overwhelming. His name was Patrick.
It made me think about our brickwalls. Especially for the women in our lines. But usually we have the name- always a first name and the need to discover the maiden name.
The show makes genealogy fun.
Seeing the actors so surprised by the findings reminded me of 1984 when I was first starting my family history journey. I had gone to Goodwood where my maternal grandfather had roots. I stopped at the store in town to ask about any local cemeteries as I was doing my family research. The clerk showed me a book written on Goodwood. I did not the cash to buy and the clerk would not take a cheque. She said the author might. So given her address, I went to Mrs. Todd's house. What a gracious lady. Yes she would take a cheque. While talking with her I discovered that my gggrandfather had 12 daughters and lived in Goodwood.
That feeling of discovering a piece of the puzzle. The book had some pictures of family.
So on those occasions when genealogy is bogged down or the scanning or organizing becomes boring, it is so much fun to watch newbies to the process discovering their roots. Of course there are many researchers on the show Finding Your Roots that does the work. Yes there would be hours of research to put together that Book of Life presented to the celebrities. But fun to see!

SNOW DAY- GOOD TO STAY INSIDE

Actually not snow but snow pellets and freezing rain. Icy roads are worse than snow. Even parked my car in the garage. The postal service was suspended for the day. No mail delivery. Good. I did not have to walk to my mailbox.
It is a good day to putter and get odd jobs done. Or take a nap. Or read a book.
A homemade soup for lunch with a slice of pizza filled the soul.
I do worry about family members needing to be out in this bad weather. I remember stressing about driving home in it and worrying about getting the kids in time. One perk of retirement!

BARB'S GENEALOGY TIDBITS-LEONA VIOLET PARKIN-ALTON

Leona Violet Parkin was my paternal grandmother. I have written a first draft of her story.
I did not know her because she died before I was born. Although I had the usual genealogical date of birth, marriage and death, there was  a need to have more of a story for her. I call this a first draft since I will continue like other family historians do to try to find more of a social context for her.
So here is one ancestor's story for my grandchildren.

Since the picture of Leona was sideways, I thought I would repost it here.
I love it when people wrote messages on the back of pictures.

WORLD CANCER DAY 2019

There seems to be a day for everything. But World Cancer Day brings awareness of cancer. Those experiencing cancer it is there every day. For those supporting those with cancer, it can be a painful and emotional journey. Some cancers are curable or at least go into remission. Some cancers are not. So no matter how much treatment and will to live, the inevitable result is death. The long journey there can be full of hope, hopelessness, being helpful, helplessness and lots of emotions. The emotional roller coaster ride. After death there can be those flashbacks and memories of the journey.
All the fund raising has one goal. To try to find a cure for cancer in our life time. So for those experiencing this journey today, it is the hope. Hope of a better future and longer life. Surviving cancer is always the real struggle. So taking one day at a time. Put in meaningful goals in the person's life, family life and social life. Do not stop living. There is a saying.

" TO WAIT TO DIE OR TO LIVE UNTIL YOU DIE!"
So make the choice.

A FUND RAISER FOR CANCER SUPPORT.

The Grit and Grace evening in honour of my husband's late second cousin Laura.
An evening with my daughter to mingle with family and friends. $44,000 raised to support the Look Good Feel Better organization that supports women experiencing cancer treatment. What a fun evening with food, drinks and music. In my work as a Social Worker, I have counselled and supported many people throughout their cancer journey. To attend a community event to provide support was a nice retirement endeavor. To give continued encouragement to Laura's family was the goal of all that attended.

FEBRUARY WITH ITS CHALLENGES

Yeah February 1st and one day closer to Spring. However, winter festivals and events are occurring throughout the country. Our deep freeze should end in a few days. Although there was a blue Monday in January, February is actually a heavy month for mental health issues. Be aware of friends and family with depression issues. Suicide can be a big concern. Reach out and share with those folks. Invite to events or just go and see them. The more eventful the weather, the more difficult it is for people as going out is just more debilitating. Encourage doctor visits if needed. Offer hope for a better day. Listen to those with concerns.
