DAISY BRINGS A LITTLE HAPPINESS TO THE CANADIAN GARDEN

Season for the variety of daisies in the garden. Smaller than a Sunflower, it is a happy little flower. It adds some colour differently. Between the purple, yellow and red colours of others, the white draws our eye to it. Besides we can all play- he loves me, he loves me not! There are some wild ones that like to grow in my paths and in the garden. I leave them until they are finished flowering. Letting some wild ones abound allows their little seeds to go to the wind to grow elsewhere. Although I do not have a wild flower bed per se, I actually have several wild flowers growing so I feel I am doing my duty to save the natural growth. Of course, weeds do find their way too. Since the laws changed about what kind of week killer can be used , the weeds at the side of the roads are abundant and ugly. Needless to say they make their way to gardens. So when a few wild flowers that are actually pretty arrive, they are a wonderful addition. Thus the daisy with all its varieties is a June/July garden flower. Do you have daisies in your garden? THE LOWLY DANDELION

Weeding a garden or lawn of pesky vegetation is a gardener's constant job. Now with the law forbidding many pesticides and other weed killers the growth along the highways is incredible. However, this field of dandelions look rather pretty, does it not? Some people make dandelion wine! Perhaps we need to find a new use for the dandelion. Unlike other weeds, no one has an allergy to it-so it is less harmful to humans!

BOOTS

Are footwear used for many different occasions. Construction boots, ski boots, riding boots, snowboard boots, winter boots, spring rain boots, a big long boot called a wader for fishermen to name a few. Attractive legs look great in fashionable boots with heels! Many expressions include boot. Someone gives you the boot- you're fired! Any Western can have a character that "dies with his boots on." Am I scared?- " I'm shaking in my boots!" If you are not behaving- I'll get a big boot and give you a swift kick in the butt! We boot our computers. While training for the Armed Forces, we go to Boot Camp. In England, the boot is the trunk of the car as well as BOOTS is an UK pharmacy chain! Cowboy boots can be popular periodically. My mother had a red pair that received several second looks when she wore them locally! Nancy Sinatra's "These boots are made for Walking" was a hit song. Some creative gardeners have taken old boots, filled them with dirt and planted some flowers as outdoor decoration planters! Personally, I bought the best winter boots that have been perfect for my winter walks to and from work. Do you have a boot tale to tell? EVERGREEN TREES

Evergreen trees are our salvation in the winter months when the deciduous trees have lost their leaves and the flowers have died. Covered in snow they are subject of many Christmas cards and beautiful photographs. In natural settings they make a winter walk enjoyable. On a ski slope they can be markers for the skier. Many Christmas light displays have encircled the trees. Most homes will have at least one evergreen tree. My tree on the front lawn is quite tall now. There are two more in the backyard. In the Spring and Summer they are overshadowed by the other vegetation. Now the green stands out like a big gardener's thumb. In some ways they are boring and many gardeners debate whether to plant the evergreen tree at all. But over the years as the tree grows taller and taller it is seen as a wise decision. Besides there are no leaves to rake- just some pine cones to be hidden under it. The winter with its evergreen trees is like life. Are we like the evergreen tree as our lives move along? Is it in the winter of our lives that our worth is really understood? Do other things overshadow us in earlier times? Even with a little white, there still is such beauty.
