CONSTRUCTION MAKES FOR INTERESTING PHOTOS

With all the construction in Richmond Hill and area, thought a few photos of the equipment and site was warranted.

 A roller.

A packer.

A Backhoe.

 Of course I took these pictures early on a Saturday morning so I would not be in the way of the workers. Spoke to Adolph about the machines. He looked at me as if everyone knows what they are. Well I did not know the name of them.

Adolph explained that one machine is to put the stone and the other is to pack the stone. Otherwise if it is not packed it will just settle. There could be more images to capture at another time. I just found these materials interesting to photograph.

WINTER, SPRING, CONSTRUCTION

It never fails the minute the ice is off the roads that a street will be closed or lanes reduced for construction. A huge industry that has projects ongoing across this nation. Employment for a variety of skilled labourers. Every city has repairs, projects and new development. Exciting when it is finished but hard to have closures or delays. Oh construction- a major part of the warmer weather.

THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY-KEEPING CANADIANS MOVING AND GROWING

With the warmer temperatures, the construction season is in full swing. Road closures or sometimes just lanes causes havoc for the commute. The Construction Industry is a huge component of the Canadian economy. Employing people in many capacities, it helps the ebb and flow of our lives. From electricians to crane operators to the labourer to landscapers there are so many jobs in the industry. Materials and manpower keep us going. There is a huge responsibility to do any job correctly. If a building collapses or a sinkhole occurs, the engineers involved in the projects will be scrutinized. Thus safety with the hard hats, construction boots and an eye to work safely on any job site is paramount. I find a construction site fascinating. I love the way a project comes alive. There are some condo buildings near me in various stages. Digging down to put in the infrastructure- the electrical, plumbing, water, hydro etc. before the concrete could be laid. The building floor by floor is a process or a work of art. Sometimes I walk by them deliberately just to see the progress to date.  Seeing any building especially city sky scrapers is a reminder of the number of people and systems that were needed to work correctly.
Adolph had a summer job years ago when he was  an university student on a skyscraper in downtown Toronto. He was the gofer to bring coffee and other items to the workers on the 15th floor that had no elevator. Needless to say, he had very well toned calves at the end of the season after all the walking up and down the stairs.
Having been involved in a small construction project, i.e. the building of our current family home, I have some knowledge of the process and layers of work needed to be done. The ebb and flow of what needs to come first then second and so on to the completion of the house. Then the ripping apart of our yard several years ago to accommodate 50 boulders from a work site Adolph was contracted to do gave some knowledge of a big landscape project. My paths- the boulders as the boundaries- and gardens were a constant commitment of creativity for several years. Now with the overgrown gardens and the need to weed non-stop is my current project. Constructing and maintaining go hand in hand! Children love all the construction equipment often liking to know the names of each piece. So little tractors or wheelbarrows or diggers can be toys to teach about the Construction Industry. Respect for all the workers! There are individuals in many communities that take pride in the large projects where they took part. Many family members in Toronto brag about their role in building the CN tower for example! Makes us wonder if the workers that built the pyramids in ancient times told their children and grandchildren about their role. I know it was supposed to be slaves but maybe they were not. Maybe real employed workers of the Pharaohs! An ancient Construction Industry!

LIFE IS LIKE A CONSTRUCTION SITE

Construction sites are busy, interesting places. Machines, workers, drawings and supervisors make the action happen. What becomes noticeable is the time it takes to lay a proper foundation with all the infrastructure. A need to go down before the top can be built. Lessons for a person. We all need a strong foundation to grow up!!

ARE YOU READY FOR SUMMER?

Recently I have written about parents preparing for summer, school ending, the garden and in the Spring wanting to go on some road trips. Well here we are at the end of June. All the preparation, organization, wishful thinking, ideas and family plans are about to begin. For many though there is a transition time. Children moving to a new class. Lessons over for a season. School routine replaced by a camp routine. There is summer traffic that gets replaced by Construction! Along with the "yeah" summer is here, there is also some sad moments- saying goodbye to a teacher or principal moving away. Friends going to a different school next year. At work, people going on vacation so the workload doubles to cover for that person. For me, I often remember summers from the past. Camping and cottaging with family! The water sports- skiing and canoeing- are done sporadically now. It was such a part of my daily life as a young person! Now I have some Stat days and a week's vacation which I try to pack as much summer living to the point it almost exhausts me. For the last few years I was on pins and needles worrying about the folks out west and always keeping weeks of vacation in my vacation bank! Ready to fly west at any time! Different this year with Mom passing away in February and Dad secure in a safe nursing home setting. The old worry creeps up sometimes but then I remember, no it is over! I can concentrate on my family and myself! What will this summer bring? I am sure there will be some surprises- good ones I hope? Then I remember good summers, indifferent ones and painful ones! Adolph's folks both died in the summer months- one in August and the other in July, many years apart. A beautiful grandson was born in the summer! One of my trips to Italy was in the summer! One daughter married in the summer! Hot summers! Rainy summers! Cool summers! All shapes and sizes! Although the months are the same length as other months, summer always seems to go too quickly. To answer my question, I am ready for summer. A couple of road trips, big family barbecue day, trip to a friend's cottage, small barbecue for Canada Day and watching my grandchilren in August to let my daughter and son celebrate their anniversary are planned. The rest of the time I think I will roll with my mood, attack my pile of books for reading, work on a writing project or two, of course exercise more but otherwise do as little as possible if that mood hits me too. Benefitting from my husband's hard work in the garden with many veggie dishes to enjoy!  " Summertime and the living is easy "strikes me as my mantra this year! So are you ready for summer or are you just going to roll with whatever comes your way? Whatever you plan to do, make it a good one!

BOOTS

Are footwear used for many different occasions. Construction boots, ski boots, riding boots, snowboard boots, winter boots, spring rain boots, a big long boot called a wader for fishermen to name a few. Attractive legs look great in fashionable boots with heels! Many expressions include boot. Someone gives you the boot- you're fired! Any Western can have a character that "dies with his boots on." Am I scared?- " I'm shaking in my boots!" If you are not behaving- I'll get a big boot and give you a swift kick in the butt! We boot our computers. While training for the Armed Forces, we go to Boot Camp. In England, the boot is the trunk of the car as well as BOOTS is an UK pharmacy chain! Cowboy boots can be popular periodically. My mother had a red pair that received several second looks when she wore them locally! Nancy Sinatra's "These boots are made for Walking" was a hit song. Some creative gardeners have taken old boots, filled them with dirt and planted some flowers as outdoor decoration planters! Personally, I bought the best winter boots that have been perfect for my winter walks to and from work. Do you have a boot tale to tell?
