DOES THE PERFECT HOME COME WITH A WHITE PICKET FENCE?
Some earlier concepts for the perfect life was a home with a white picket fence. Farms often had such a fence around the home to separate it from the barn area. The 1950s postwar life in the suburbs always included the picket fence. Perhaps it went back to the earlier times where people of wealth had such a fence so it makes sense. The same with a wonderful green lawn-useless but it looks good and speaks of wealth. If one had property and a large lawn-well you had money. The fence! Keeps life contained and supposed to keep the critters out. A white fence from wood actually is work. Needs to be painted every few years! The modern fences from iron or aluminum are quite low maintenance. They look similar but no work. Funny- on my walk to work there is a home that has such a picket fence. Where did the notion of a white picket fence start? Was it a North American thing? A southern state thing? I don't recall seeing white picket fences in Europe, do you?
