Summer is the time to eat fruit. The Canada Food Guide says 5-6 portions of fruit and vegetables every day. With the summer bounty growing right in our backyards it sure is time to enjoy! My favourite are the cherries. Baskets can be eaten in a few days. My folks used to have fresh cherries in their yard in Westbank British Columbia- right in the Okanagan Valley. What was funny was the fact they were in Orchard country and could buy buckets for a reasonable price! They did not have to grow their own. During visits in the summer, guests would help pick the fruit. My kids sure enjoyed the fresh cherries when we visited in 1989. Strawberries are another favourite- eaten fresh, with ice cream or made into jam. A Canadian staple! There are pockets of fruit belts in Canada. Nova Scotia- Annapolis Valley, Ontario- Niagara region and British Columbia- Okanagan. Of course, many farmers may have a few fruit trees as well as homeowners decide to grow some of their own too! Fruit good for your health and good to eat! So what is your favourite one!
