I love this picture from the Toronto public library1965 in downtown Richmond Hill. Basically it is still as congested today.

SPRING FLOWERS POPPING UP THEIR HEADS IN ONTARIO 2023

 Spring is a funny word in Ontario.

Sunny one day. Rain. Snow flurries.

No matter the weather the spring bulbs start to come up.

Snow drops when appearing really mean the earth is revealing nature at its best.

Next come the crocuses.

Marching forward to April, the tulips start to appear in green leaves. Flowers take time. So there will be lots of tulip photos.

How is your Spring garden coming along? Of course on the west coast the blossoms are in full bloom.

RICHMOND HILL-MEMORIES OF 2019 LOCAL CONSTRUCTION ON YONGE STREET

 It seemed the construction for the Rapidway from Newmarket to the Finch subway station lasted forever.

Now with the new lanes, the left turn lanes and some new vegetation along Yonge Street it is a memory. Not very distant yet.

So labelling lots of my photos in my Photo Gallery I decided to post some of those pictures now.

It was good for me to venture out to take photos at that time. Close to home so I did not leave Adolph alone for very long. Helped with my creativity. Now when I review this set of photos I am glad I took them. I have some more of Yonge Street recently with the bus shelters and bus laneways. Eventually I will collect all my Yonge photos and show the changes in the area in such a short time. 

Construction throughout history has been such an important time in our lives.

Adolph did some of his work life in construction so I have memories of his work and activities.

BARB'S GENEALOGY TIDBITS- LINKING KAWARTHA RAILROAD HISTORY TO CORTLAND ALTON

 My ancestor Cortland Alton was a conductor for the railroad in the 1900s.

He met my grandmother Leonie Parkin in Lindsay. Leonie lived with her family at the home on Ball Point, Mariposa Township, Victoria County. ( now the City of Kawartha Lakes)

Eventually Cortland was stationed in Belleville during the war years and afterwards.

Recently at a Kawartha Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society online webinar with the Peterborough library, resources from the Archives of the Municipality of the City of Kawartha Lakes were discussed.

It was mentioned that a train museum existed in Coboconk. According to some internet research it was one of 60 stations that served the communities of Victoria County My maternal grandfather Ernie Ellis was buried in the cemetery in Coboconk.

Trying to find a museum was tough. There is not one. There was information however on the Coboconk Train Station.

The Train Station was renovated in recent years and is now a Wellness Centre in Coboconk. As all towns suffer the loss of Heritage buildings it was great to see the train station was saved.

On their website there is some history about the train station.

Lindsay was a hub for train activity. Train history buffs can research more information on trains and their role in Ontario's history on many online sites. 

I will try to discover more of the train history in this region.

WELCOME SPRING 2023-NOW FOR THE FLOWERS TO BLOOM

Richmond Hill is still chilly with pockets of snow on the ground and even my driveway.

Sometimes flowers start to break through the ground.

When we see the snow drops then we really know Spring is here.

NANA SAYS GRANDCHILDREN MAKE ME SMILE

 Spending time as Uber Nana, ie driving grandchildren to dentist appointments or sometimes school duty gave me the name.

It is an opportunity to talk with my teenage grandchildren. And listen if they talk to me.

Having a sleepover with the little ones gives me company and time to have some noise in the house.

Going to hockey games and watching the efforts of two players is joyous. Seeing the skills improve over time has been amazing.

Social isolation is a huge factor in senior living. Being out with family and participating in whatever way keeps the soul active.

I love them and all the antics they give me.

MARCH IS MAPLE SYRUP TIME IN CANADA

 We love our Maple Syrup.

I did a post in 2017 on Maple Syrup Locations in Ontario. March 5, 2017. You can find the link in the sidebar to your right.

It was for the 150th of Canada.

At the Cambridge Farmers Market.

On a trip to St. Joseph's Island near Sault Ste Marie Ontario, we visited Thompson Farm where one of the largest output of Maple Syrup is produced.

Quebec has the highest production in Canada.

Maple Syrup- a wonderful Canadian food. Thanks to our Indigenous people who showed us how to collect sap and produce it.

I love it on pancakes, in my oatmeal and use it in baking.
