GOSSIP-DO YOU LOVE IT OR LOATHE IT?

Okay we all hear some gossip sometimes. We all share some sometimes. But do you live to know all the scope on everyone you know. There is celebrity news but is it important to know it. Some celebrities make a living on nothing, just pictures posing and doing the ordinary. And getting paid because they have a following on Social Media. Some people have jobs reporting- well gossip.

The Oxford  Dictionary gives a good definition. It tells us- easy or unconstrained talk or writing about persons or social incidents; idle talk;groundless rumours.

Can it be hurtful? Well yes! Can it be false? Well yes! To want to know everything about others means what!

Even as a child, I did not like the little girl cliches that gossiped about others. Who cares if someone wore a different coat or whatever?
In any work environment there are the gossip teams that drag information from one area to another. People who want to know and share all.

Knowledge is power. So is it a power trip to have the latest. I know something you do not know.

Unfortunately there are some people who are not discreet and flaunt their indiscretions everywhere. Extra marital affairs in the workplace can be uncomfortable for the other staff around them. No one really wants to see someone snuggling up to their new squeeze in a public place knowing there is a spouse with children at home. Besides it is a workplace. Those not cheating are not being public and snuggling up to their partners in public places at work. The line is drawn between home and work.
Be discreet!

Back to gossip. Why is it so interesting? Why does someone's problems carry such delight to others? "Did you hear?"

I like to be one of those people that knows tons about everyone but like the three monkeys- hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil! If I do share something sometimes which I do make sure it is with someone I trust. Like my husband, he is not listening anyway! My reality is the fact that someone shared something and I wish to honour it. If the person cares to share with 50 people, okay but not from my lips.

So do you love gossip? Do you spead it? Do you go out of your way to know things about people? Do you loathe it with I don't care about it? What are your thoughts?

THE HARM OF GOSSIP

Adults complain about the younger crowd and the gadgets used to spread ill thoughts or bully. Yet gossip has always been around school, workplaces, friends and family groups. It is equally as harmful. We think it is okay to know dirt about celebrities, but is it?  Doesn't everyone deserve some privacy in their lives? My advice- loose lips sink ships! So if you do not want someone to know your business then do not tell them. Trust your closest friends and family. Another piece of advice- if someone tells you something, keep it to yourself. The person can tell a hundred people, but you do not have to tell anyone. In moments of weakness we all share information, sometimes because we need to vent. That venting should not become fodder for gossip. A wife can complain about a spouse. A child about a parent. A workmate about a bad day at work. Should that rant become public gossip? I think not. One can have a difficult marriage for example. But there were moments of love to be remembered if the spouse dies. However is there good gossip? Maybe, so and so had their baby! Guess who got engaged? Just be careful what is shared! Especially if someone shared a secret with you!

HOW TO MAINTAIN PRIVACY IN A MODERN WORLD!

With all the social media, allowing credit card companies to know our financial business and sharing our lives, it is difficult to maintain real privacy. Some people allow their lives to be open books to everyone while others only try to share only with certain friends and family. Trusting that your confidence will not be broken is very important. Loose lips sink ships is my motto! If I do not share what someone has told me with anyone, then I can not be part of a gossip circle. If asked a question, simple answer- don't know! There is power with knowledge! Don't you love it when new information comes out- " I knew that all along" will come from those in your life who like to know everything about everyone. Well who cares! Eventually, new news becomes old news. As a social worker, confidentialiy is paramount. So work colleagues and friends will share concerns and information in a safe way! So are you a trusted friend? Do you like to maintain your own privacy about certain aspects of your life? Do you like to be an open book for all to see? Privacy, private thoughts and confidentiality are interesting concepts in this modern world!

PRIVACY

Privacy is that luxury we all crave when we want to collect our thoughts. The rich and famous when dealing with a personal event will ask for privacy. Why does anyone need to know the details of a person's life? In my profession, I hear many stories and decide what goes into a person's chart that is relevant to the current situation. With friends, I respect what they have shared with me and expect the same respect in return. We do not have to share everything with everyone everytime. Friends and family know our stories! Do you have moments where you felt others were questioning you too much? Do you want privacy in your life? Do you give the same courtesy to others? Do you cringe at gossip? Do you avoid the gossip mongers in your life? I know I do!
