BARB'S GENEALOGY TIDBITS- HARD TO PART WITH INFORMATION

As a nephew's birthday is celebrated today, it is also an anniversary of genealogy research.
35 years ago I started researching. My mother was in town for the birth so I picked her brain about our family.
There were no databases to be easily accessed online. To the library, using microfische machines, writing letters to potential family members, posting research questions on newsletters. So there were many handwritten notes and ideas. Lots of letters from others.
Fast forward to the digital age and ability to print up neat transcribed pages. Connect via email, facebook groups and other social media.
So those precious notes can be redundant. But they are my notes and parting with them is not as easy as it should be.
So looking at duplication of information and trying to weed it out.
Still need to put a family tree or two online. Just deciding where to put it.

BUSY WEEK NOW TIME TO BREATHE

Some weeks just have too many misc things to do. Meetings, funeral visitation, correspondence, bills to pay, well you get the picture.
Rushing and going.
But today time to breathe. Plans changed due to the rain as I wanted to work on the jungle out there in my yard.
So will get to genealogical projects on the go. Actually feel good about the writing that is coming along. Time to continue to weed those genealogical albums some more.
I did make time to do a barbecue last night for us before a meeting.
So I am breathing well!!

HISTORY LESSONS FOR YOUTH- D-DAY CELEBRATIONS 2019

Watching coverage of the D-Day celebrations, a wonderful theme emerged. The involvement of youth- high school students from across Canada participating in the event. Placing the flowers of the 359 soldiers that fell hitting Juno Beach in a walkway to the beach was poignant. News announcers stated several times that they were not on their cell phones but paying attention to all around them.
When interviewed, the enormity of the event struck them. What will be learned from this!! They will help to carry the message from history forward to others. They met vets. They saw where they fought. They were part of the larger picture.
As a grandparent, I have learned. Talk to the grandchildren about life and events. Your children do not want to listen. Teach. Talk. Share. Show pictures. Even let them video tape you talking. Use the modern methods to share. Get in to the child's world.
I have noticed at Remembrance Day ceremonies there are more youth attending than in previous decades. Encourage that involvement. I saved some handouts from an event to put in the memory boxes of my grandchildren.
The youth will carry the message to their children and grandchildren. They will tell them they were there on Juno Beach with the veterans.

PUT OUT YOUR CANADIAN FLAGS TO HONOUR OUR VETS FOR D-DAY

I put my little Canadian flags everywhere in my trees and the banner tree to tree to honour and celebrate D-Day Celebrations for June 6th.
I watched some of the live coverage from France today. The news caster Brian was asked about how he has felt over the years covering the events. He said the sacrifice made by our Armed Forces has grown over the years.In his youth it was about the grandeur and celebration but now what the people did.
So Sacrifice is a good word to use.

75 IS A GOOD NUMBER- REMEMBERING D-DAY 1944

Canada should stop and reflect on the work and sacrifices made during World War Two. To remember D-Day is significant. Many of the veterans are getting to the end of their days. So if you see a vet, say thank you.
On June 6th, stop and give a moment of reflection.

JUNE- THE BUSY MONTH ALMOST LIKE CHRISTMAS

Okay six months to Christmas. But June for families and children is so busy. In my family two children's birthdays, a dance recital and a Grade 8 graduation happening. So attendance at the events as well as the usual activities makes it busy even for a Nana.
Needing to assist with care of the grandchildren as work events warrant extra duties.
Then the garden as you know by now is a jungle. The summer workload just increases.
However with aging, the energy level decreases. So plodding rather than full out aggressive work is necessary.
But having the warmer weather and the opportunity to be outside for a coffee, reading a book and getting some sunshine is a blessing too.
Yes the house will be a little dustier as the month evolves.
