CANCER FUND RAISERS FIGHT FOR A CURE

Attending the Road Hockey to cure cancer event for the Princess Margaret Hospital was a worthwhile event. Taking the grandchildren to see their Dad play and be part of the cause is good for everyone. Lots of families supporting their teams. No trophies, just fun road/ball hockey. Inspirational speeches. The goal is to cure cancer in our lifetime. Are you going to a fundraiser? The most popular ones include the Terry Fox runs each September!

NANA SAYS FUND RAISERS GIVE CHILDREN A CHANCE TO REMEMBER A LOVED ONE

Participating in fund raisers for special causes, give children of all ages a chance to run, jump rope, walk, play road hockey or paddle a dragon boat for the event. Letting children know our loved ones are not forgotten opens the door for dialogue about the people who left our lives. That's why the Ice Bucket challenge brought so much awareness to ALS-Lou Gherig's disease- without being preachy. Right now there are so many Cancer events. it is easy to join one or just give a small donation to sponsor someone. Pick another cause or hospital or organization- calling it your own!  It is not necessary to try to cover all the causes but focus on one gives your children a chance to begin to see the community and their part in it. For example, in Canada the Terry Fox run has become a popular one. Schools across Canada hold small runs in Terry's honour so on an individual basis so the children can contribute to the bigger cause.  February can be jump rope for Heart and Stroke. The list goes continues. So in little ways children are learning to be part of the larger causes that can have lifelong lessons for them.

SEPTEMBER AND FUND RAISERS FOR CANCER RESEARCH

September ending with a flurry of warm weather. No more time to eat dinner outside. Time to clean up more of the garden. Time to finish some projects. Being busy and enjoying the month made it enjoyable. Going to a fund raiser last Saturday with my younger daughter and grandchildren to watch my son-in-law participate in the Road Hockey-Game On Cancer event for Princess Margaret Hospital was a good day with family. Seeing some sports celebrities old and young made the day even more interesting.

Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way. So wherever you are in Canada or in the world, find a way to honour those loved ones and help researchers to continue to find ways to treat cancer and eventually find a cure. If cancer is not your cause, find another one- like drugs for the Ebola crisis! No one person can save the world. But each person one event or idea at a time can make a difference.
