TULIPS IN MAY IN CANADA

TULIPS are such a delight in our country.

I have photographed them every year.

Some in my garden and some in places I have visited.

The Tulip Festival in Ottawa 2011 on our 40th anniversary trip.

2012 beauties!!

At the Library in a huge bed of pink like a moving ocean.

Back to my garden.

Downtown.

Tulips help to highlight a garden on a city street.

A Harbourfront journey in downtown Toronto May 2016 to celebrate our 45th anniversary.

 After a rain.

A little cluster daffodils crept into the picture.

2017 the 150th celebration of Canada.

A perfect tulip showing the Canadian red and white for the celebration.

A trip to Niagara on the Lake. So many tulips along the street. 2019
Orange in more than one shade.

 Oh the pink. Heavenly.

Of course another beautiful year for my garden too.

Then the Fall brought the idea to plant those bulbs for the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Europe.

So planted in the Fall.

This year 2020 some came up in the garden just in time for the May 8th celebrations.

None in my pots because the squirrels ate them.

A row of them with one lonely one blooming at the end. I am still waiting for the rest to bloom. But with a surprise May snowfall it was hard for them.

So tulips bring so much joy to the garden. Thank you to the Dutch for this beautiful flower.

LIBERATION TULIPS FROM THE NETHERLANDS CELEBRATING 75 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

The Legion offered the purchase of tulip bulbs for the anniversary of Canadians liberating the Netherlands in 1945.

So I bought 3 packages of 15 each June 2019. They arrived in late August.

I planted a row in the main front garden, some by the door and several in planters in early November 2019.
The ones in planters did not bloom due to my squirrels digging them up and eating most of them.

Monitoring their growth during the end of April

The one close to the house grew first.

Then a group of three making the area very pretty.

They are really struggling all to bloom this May 8th- the 75th Anniversary of VE- Victory in Europe. However the cool May day kept all of them but one lonely one at the end from blooming. Doesn't it look like they are struggling to bloom!!

I have been checking every day for the last week hoping to get a nice row of tulips for this post. so the above picture is the best I can do.

It is a beautiful orange tulip. A Dutch colour.

The Sponsors for this project are listed above.

KLM- Royal Dutch Airlines

Canadian Tulip Festival/Festival Canadien Des Tulipes

Kingdom of the Netherlands- Royaume des Pays-Bas

Beavertails Pastry

NCC/CCN

De Vroomen Bulb Canada INC

The bulbs are a product of Holland grown from cultivated stock.

The goals was to plant 1.1 million tulips for the 1.1 million Canadians who served.

I did my little part of the project. I am now enjoying these lovely tulips in my garden. As it says on the package $1.00 from each bag sold goes to The Royal Canadian Legion. So helping veterans as well.

ANOTHER PROCESSION DOWN THE HIGHWAY OF HEROES IN ONTARIO

The procession to honour the 6 Armed Forces personnel dying in the helicopter crash last week off the coast of Greece occurred May 6 2020.

A somber service at the Trenton base before starting to Toronto along the Highway of Heroes.

Although people were told to stay home, many lined the route- physically distancing of course.

God Bless and keep our personnel.

MAY 5TH 1945- LIBERATION OF THE NETHERLANDS

It was supposed to be a huge European celebration with some of the remaining veterans going for the celebration.

COVID-19 changed that!
Virtual celebrations and staying home.

Still time to wave our Canadian flags in honour of those that fought for us.

Thank you to the Dutch for all our beautiful tulips.

So if you know a veteran. Send some love.

MAY 5TH/ CINCO DE MAYO

Cinco de mayo is a Mexican holiday. Often considered its Independence Day commemorating the victory of the Mexican Army over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla.

For those of us who love Mexico and its people for vacations south, it is an opportunity during this stay at home mandate to have some fun.

So bring out any Mexican souvenirs you have and have a Fiesta.

Eat Mexican food. Make some Tacos. Drink a tequila or a Corona beer.

Have a veggie platter.

Put on some Mexican music. Or any music of choice.

I think I will get my sombero off the wall and have some.
Adios amigos!!

THE HUDSON BAY COMPANY TURNS 350 TODAY

The Hudson Bay Company started as a fur trading company in Canada 350 years ago.

Ironically it is now foreign owned by Americans. Go figure!!

Its history is rich and too rich to summarize here. So go online and find the historical references.

It would be a good history lesson for children and teens who need some local history and culture.

The iconic blankets.

Now so many goods with the famous stripes.

Happy Birthday Hudson's Bay!!

MAY- MY FAVOURITE MONTH DESPITE COVID19

May has always been my favourite month.

I love the budding of the trees, the flowers, the weather usually becomes warmer. A blessing to be outside.

For those at home self isolating, which is the majority of the population, a time to be on a balcony, take a physically distancing walk, sit on the porch, walk around the lawn.

Open the windows and doors to let the fresh air in the house.

But the garden blooming with the spring flowers gives me hope that nature keeps on ticking.

The scent of these beauties. Hyacinths!
This group of tulips is always first. I see them from my kitchen.

Daffodils with the joyous yellow.

May- mother's day, an anniversary, a long weekend, time to get outside.
So how will May be this year!!
