MEMORIES OF LOVED ONES THROUGH FLOWERS

My mother-in-law loved carnations especially red ones. She died 20 years ago. At Christmas this year, I bought a dozen red carnations with one red rose. It is a memory to her as well as a gesture to my husband. He always misses his mother.
Flowers are an easy way to keep a memory in front of us. Putting the elephant in the room and talking about it.
As a clinical Social Worker, I would encourage my clients to create a memory for their loved one in their grief. Planting a tree is always a favourite one.
A donation to a charity.
But my favourite continues to be some flowers. For the last anniversary of my mother's death I bought the girls and me some little pink tea roses.

A FLOWER FOR CLARA HUGHES IN SUPPORT OF MENTAL ILLNESS

Spring flowers are joyous! The daffodil reminds us to support the cancer efforts. Is there a flower that would support Mental Health? As Clara Hughes rides across Canada in support of MH awareness maybe we could be creative in honouring this illness. Since Clara has red hair, perhaps a flower with some red like a Poppy or Red Rose? Can you think of another one that may work?

VALENTINE'S DAY

Is a day for sweethearts and lovers everywhere. If you have not told the people in your life you love them, then today is the great opportunity to do it. Valentine's has historic roots to Roman times. It is always interesting how our modern times are so rooted to other periods of history. So enjoy the heart cards and chocolates. Hug your little ones! Are you celebrating with loved ones today? Or did you take advantage of a quiet Sunday celebration and lunch? Remember the Red Rose is a true symbol of love!
