A DAY AT THE FARM PICKING APPLES

 Going to a farm is fun with family.

So Sonya, Allie, Easton and I went to Applewood Farm in Markham for some apple picking.

Getting the best apples.

The entrance fee let us pick a squash or pumpkin each. So off Easton went to find the best pumpkin.

5 THINGS TO EMBRACE IN THE FALL

As Summer is winding down, Fall is fast approaching. So how to enjoy it.

1. The colours. The changing trees. The country drives to view the colours. Of course the Fall pictures.

2. The Fall markets. The pumpkins, The squash. The potatoes. The Mums.
The bales of hay. Supporting the local farmers is always a wonderful Canadian tradition.

3. Apple picking. For young families, it is a must. For the grandparents, go with the children and enjoy the farms. Brooks Farm near us is a wonderful fun adventure day for all.

4. Cleaning up the gardens. Planning for the Spring. Do any bulbs need to be planted for that array of Spring bulbs to come alive? Do you have lots of pine cones? So keep some to use in decorating.

5. Of course, outdoor fall decorations are fun. Mid- fall the Halloween stuff comes out.

Fall is also a time for planning festive and fun events. Christmas at the end so obtaining items to use for gifts and decorations can be good. The cooler weather is better for sleeping for those with respiratory health problems. So get those folks out and about. Staying indoors can be so socially isolating.

AN APPLE A DAY IN CANADA

It's apple picking season in Canada. Depending on the location some apples are ready sooner than others. Bought in the stores or at a market or a trip to apple pick with the kids it is a fun time. Sparta, delicious, mackintosh, gala or whatever your favourite may be.

An apple orchard is a welcoming place. Walking up and down the rows to select the ones to  take home. A ladder to reach the high branches. Local farms have areas for picking. Brooks Farm in Mt. Albert has many activities along with apple picking for families. The children really love it.

Teaching children where food grows is an important life lesson too.

Farms offer opportunities to see animals and understand the methods of old times and modern living. Like the century old fence made with boards.
Apples are a good source of nutrients. You know the old saying- An apple a day keeps the doctor away! It may be true but apples just taste good eaten fresh or make into pies or apple crisp. Fall desserts with apples are tasty! So go eat an apple!
