And you lose what you had. During a recent bedside interview, an elderly woman facing death told me this was a favourite saying of her mother. It makes so much sense. I think of people with dementia who had good years until major cognitive decline took a piece of them at a time. If they had stopped living when they were so able and functional then life would have been different for them. I think she was talking about herself, don't you?
I don't think there's a easy answer here. When does the tide turn? Who decides? But, I suppose, it's a good idea to have a personal health directive written ahead of time.
