Welcome

Inspiration for this blog came from my cousin Roy. His daily reflections of the events in his life have been thoughtful and interesting. Family, friends, colleagues are welcome to read my blog.

HALLOWEEN HAS CHANGED OR HAS IT?

Instead of the typical ghosts and goblins, trick or treaters wear transformer, elaborate disney princess, movie characters, bumble bee, lady bug costumes to name a few. Some lawns have amazing Halloween displays instead of a simple pumpkin craved with a candle inside on a front porch. Some historians say the tradition started in pagan times or roman times or somebody's time, but the fun of the day is the next most favourite time for children- Christmas does come first still. Adults get into the mix by wearing something fun to work if allowed! There are more parties and events but the main fun is still going door to door getting the treats. I am the "pop lady". Giving cans of pop along with some Halloween candies, makes my house popular! Makes up for the simple pumpkin on the front porch! At a family get together on Saturday, my little grandchildren dressed in costume to have a group picture with some of their second cousins on my side of the family. Even had a Nana photo with them! So enjoy the day and the night! To the young and young at heart- Happy Halloweeeeeeeeeeeeeen!

A POSTCARD FROM WINNIPEG MANITOBA

Winnipeg is the 7th largest municipality in Canada.Steeped in Canadian History, it is the Captial of Manitoba. As a vibrant modern city, it is full of Theatre, entertertainment, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and a magnet to many tourists. NHL hockey has returned with the Winnipeg Jets. CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers has made the citizens proud. Howie Mendel and Burton Cummings to name a couple of celebrities call it home.
Located on the Assiniboine and Red River rivers a typical tourist attraction can include a boat ride. During a visit to my sister and family when she lived there in 1979, we all decided to take a ride on the M.S Paddlewheel Queen. Trying to stop one of my daughters from climbing on the rail resulted in a memorable two year old temper tantrum. The trouble with boats is it is hard to exit in a hurry. It became one of those family stories!

The postcards depicted are from the late 1970's. I am sure the city landscape has changed. I have not received a postcard from Winnipeg but I know I did send some to family at that time.
Do you have other comments to make about Winnipeg? It is also very cold in the winter and has the nickname of Winterpeg!
If you want a postcard featured here email me at abdm@rogers.com and I will send you my address so you can send me a postcard.

SCULPTURES-ART IN THE STREET

City streets are wonderful places to find art. My recent jaunt to downtown Toronto provided some interesting pieces to photogaph.
It looks like it might roll away. What do you think it means? What modern image or symbol is it trying to reveal?
A Water image on a city street! One of the 4 elements! Do you find it peaceful? Does it belong? Is it a whale? A dolphin? I like the way it connects to nature with the trees in the background.
Do the sculptures trigger any thoughts for you?

HALLOWEEN PARTIES

As we head into the weekend before Halloween, it is a great opportunity to go to a party. Dressing up, out of character is always fun. I had a Halloween party years ago and dressed like a cat- leotard, black tights and painted on whiskers. Slimmer then. If I had to chose a costume today, not sure what I would wear- wouldn't be so risque! My duty this Halloween is to babysit the grandkiddies so one daughter and son-in-law can go to a party! I guess I am going as Nana. The question-if you were going to a Halloween party-what would you wear? Who would you be? Would you pass on the whole costume thing? One of our friends who is a dentist came to that party years ago- guess- as a dentist! Come on adults out there, have so fun! When I shell out, I try to wear a hat or fake hair or something so that the little kiddies that come to the door know I am having fun too. Or are you one of those people that turn your lights out and does not get into the fun of the event? What do you think?

CHOICES-WHICH ROAD TO TAKE

Life is often described as a journey. We are on a road and sometimes come to intersections. Decisions must be made about which way to go. Sometimes we pick a smooth road, sometimes a bumpy road. Sometimes the road is closed for repairs and we have to detour. The choice of which way we go can be ours sometimes but sometimes it is not! Choices in life can entail so many aspects. What to have for dinner, which movie to see, setting our alarm for a specific time each morning. The hard choices are how to deal with a crisis in our lives that we did not chose- death, job loss, ill health, problem child, relationship difficulties, well you know the list! You probably have one of your own. We run into people all the time that complain about how busy they are and do not have a choice. For example, I had such an encounter last week- just asking a colleague if he was going to attend Grand Rounds that morning- I am so busy, so many meetings, I only have less than 1/2 hour daily to see my children! Does he have a choice? What do you think? Picking a hectic, busy career is a choice! Not seeing your children to accomodate a job is a choice! What about- I want to get ahead in life so I am postponing having children- a choice. Might not be a choice if waiting causes difficulty in conceiving! Or I am going to have my child in 15 activities so he/she can every opportunity so I do not have time to read a book, phone a friend and can only eat takeout because there is not time to cook- a choice! Maturity comes with making choices that are meaningful in our lives. Can there be sacrifice? Probably! We chose to back away from an argument quietly. We can chose to alleviate our boredom by doing something creative. We can make simple, daily choices that may lead to a happy life if we chose well! Choices, roads- which one are you on?

NANA SAYS WHAT'S BECOMING OF THE YOUTH TODAY?

Each generation brings new difficulties and differences. With cell phones glued to an ear, constant texting, spell check, openness about sex, drug use and some disrespect for parents and any authority, there can be concerns about the current generation of teenagers or should there be?
Think about this quotation" The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as if they alone knew everything and what passes for wisdom with us is foolishness with them. As for girls, they are forward, immodest and unwomanly in speech, behaviour and dress. "
Did it come from a parenting magazine, some guru of a child psychologist or your grandmother? No, words from ancient Greece.
It was credited to Socrates by Plato probably from Plato's Republic!  300 B.C.? I need to check the exact text again. There are other wonderful quotes from these two great philosophers. Perhaps I will share them with you at another time!
Throughout history, it has never been easy to raise children, let alone hang in there with teenagers. But we must! By continuing to be a role model and setting positive, consistent house rules with some flexibility to allow for teen autonomy, life can be bearable. Know which battles to fight! Your defiant teenager can grow into a wonderful adult with responsibility, goals and a meaningful life. Mine did! Are you struggling with your teenagers today? Are you feeling alone? Look to the wisdom of history-find some perspective!

PUT YOUR IDEAS TOGETHER-MAKE A QUILT

Quilts have a way of demonstrating that different ideas and thoughts assembled methodically can make a beautiful thing-in this case a blanket. Look at the picture-the shape of the flowers have been used creatively on each block.
Too often group thinking can succumb to that of one-the boss- or a few individuals because members may be too intimidated to express their own ideas.
Bring a quilt to your meeting, planning session, family get-together. Visually show how differences can make a beautiful whole!
Imagine the quilting bees of olden times. A group of ladies trying to decide the design of their project. Did the lightbulb go off and the suggestion- each block of using an appliqued design to be unique? But assembled with proper technique! Imagination and skill integrated together!
Now consider- the corporate world, the school, the business place- to allow such democratic allowance. Yes, there are rules and boundaries, laws to which we adhere! So ask your group to bring their own quilt block next time for an unresolved problem and see what the result could be!
Are you now busy making your own block? If so, what does it look like?

CITY IMAGES

Exploring the city with camera in hand gave some interesting images.
Arches stand the test of time.

Circles and rectangles in buildings. Shapes never change!

The Union Station facade still reflects old Toronto. Or could it be from ancient times?

CHANGE IS AS GOOD AS A REST

Is a popular saying! Changing areas in your home! Adding a new picture to a wall! Awakening at an earlier  time! Becoming more active! Deciding to add one more activity to the day! It takes the first step to get started. Make change easier for yourself. Arrange the "tools" you need in your workspace! For more pictures, have your camera handy! For writing, dictionary and thersarus by the computer along with paper, pens, pencils! For exercising, weights, step, skipping rope, balls! Rearrange your closet! Organize your drawers differently! Always ask the question-why do I want to change? Is it me? Is it the redundacy of the day? Am I bored? Am I understimulated? Am I wasting time looking for things? The larger components of our lives- our job, our relationships, our home- are huge changes that may come with too much anxiety! So change may be avoided! Or small changes help us to start to face the larger ones! Seasons are a great way to tackle change. We are forced to change our clothes closet to accomodate the new season! Actually, it feels good to try something new and know we can do it! Are you trying to change some area in your life today? Share your thoughts or stories!

A POSTCARD FROM LOURDES FRANCE

Which is situated in the Pyrenees. A beautiful location with a religious importance for Catholics. Many people go on a pilgramage to pray. Often when sick looking for a miracle. Its historical significance connects to Joan of Arc.
Many of my husband's family members from Italy have gone to Lourdes. Two postcards were found in my collection.
In 1996-" Addressed to my mother-in-law, Concetta-A Lourdes, alla Vergine Maria. Ho donato una rosa rosse per te-Gabriella." And again in 1997- Tanti affettuosissimi-saluti a tutti voi- Rosario, Gabriella & Peppino." Gabriella placed a red rose for her at the statue of the Virgin Mary in 1996 and in 1997 family are just sending greetings.
Recently some of his cousins visited this beautiful region of France. Cousin Paolo photographed the sites with his family members.
If you want a postcard featured here, email me at abdm@rogers.com and I will send you my address so you can send me a postcard.

FALL COLOURS ARE EVERYWHERE

A trip to the city on a fall day, is abound with the colours of the season. Nature against concrete and marble makes an interesting contrast.
Mums from the farm add ambience to city streets. It made me contemplate about integrative thinking. Was someone trying to illustrate its principles? Have you found some incongruous situations? If so, don't they make interesting photos?

GENEALOGY IS NOT SEXIST

As a matter of fact, most avid family historians are always hunting for that elusive great-great-great-grandmother so another surname can help the journey back in time. Despite modern times and thinking, the baby boy is still preferred over the baby girl in many cultures. To carry on the surname! Superior! Makes the Dad look important! There are many hypenated names that include both parents' names or the middle name can be the mother's last name. In genealogy it takes two- we want to know about the pairs- the 2 parents, the 4 grandparents, the 8 great-grandparents and so on! To think an advanced discipline that does not discriminate against one sex! Perhaps genealogy needs to carry its message to the world. Although it is one of the more popular hobbies, some people still miss the point of its real purpose. Family lines include everyone. The maternal influence is equal to any paternal influence. The names, the history, the country, all include great stories in any family story. Do you have family stories that include all your womenfolk? Isn't it exciting when another name is found? Love of genealogy has been one of my passions for over 26 years. Now with more information on the Internet, it is easier to find missing pieces to your puzzle. Or perhaps you are a lucky one that has someone in your family that has completed your histories? Tell me your story-I would love to hear!

A PURPLE MUM

The Flower-not the person. What a wonderful name for Fall flowers- Mums! The array of colour that can be added in pots to the porch or planted in the garden as the summer flowers are brown, wilted or just removed from the beds. The last bastion of live growth before the snow flies. As the leaves have turned their colours and many trees are now bare, Mums give us some needed hope! Like the people Moms! Too bad there is not a flower called Dads! They give lots of hope too!

NANA SAYS NEVER BRIBE OR THREATEN

Unless you have tired everything else and it is the only strategy that works. Encouragement, postive messages and consistency are the cornerstones of good parenting. And lots of love! However, there are days and times that other techniques come into play. Logical consequences for actions is important. " If you touch the hot burner, you will get burnt!" "You were told if you fight over the same toy it will be taken away!" But when you need to shop and have to drag the kids along- if you are good you will get- fries, an ice cream cone or whatever! Bribery! Sometimes necessary for even the great parent! "You will never go to another birthday party again if you do not stop!" The only problem with threats- you know what it is! If you do not carry it out, the child knows you will not carry it out and does not listen anyway nor care! I remember one consequence for actions I laid down. When my girls learnt to drive and took the family car it was very simple- no speeding, no violations or you do not get to drive it again! Driving was not a right! Somehow it worked! Have you ever used bribery? Threats? It is very difficult to be a great parent. Being a good one does take energy! Bedtime really works! We all love our children when they are sleeping- even Nanas!

DENIAL-THAT HELPFUL LITTLE DEFENSE MECHANISM

In therapy, it is the responsibility of the therapist to help the client move forward and process issues and to help identify avoidances. However, removing a protective defense mechanism must be at an important time in the therapeutic process. The client can be lead to its identification but the therapist does not remove it. Sometimes it is just left alone. So denial! In the real world, it is all around us. Often it helps us through difficult times. We usually recognize it in others. Harder to recognize it in ourselves. For many denial is not the defense mechanism of choice. I believe mine is intellectualization! Back to denial! In many situations, such as family conflict, different family members can be at different stages of the process. Since it is a crisis, sometimes the best emerges but often the worst emerges. There can be name calling and put downs from very interesting directions. If one family member gets it, but another really wants to deny the crisis, there is little that can be done. Family member, not a therapist! If the younger child gets it, but the older child does not, then the situation can become difficult. " I am older, I know more." Even if all the children are middle age! There is no reasoning! Denial is so protective. So what can be done! For me, I stop talking, I stop trying to present reason and I do what needs to be done quietly and efficiently so when the next step in the process occurs I am already there. My little saying- what will be, will be! However, for me, from a very young age, I was very perceptive and saw what needed to be done. Perhaps, that is why I chose Social Work-Counselling. I can't fix a car engine nor be a finacial analyst! But if you need some facilitation through a difficult process- well I am there! What do you think about denial? Do you think you use it through tough times? Can you identify your own personal defense mechanism? Do you really believe we all have them? Or do you think self examination is a waste of time? My profession is one that many have put down! Even from some people in my own family! In a crisis it would be so helpful for respect from all directions. Alas, everyone retreats to their own way of doing things- even if it is hurtful to other family members. Denial? Why do you feel that way? You are just too sensitive! You are taking things too personally! Denial? Rears itself and protects! Are you denying anything today?

BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER

In this case, they are actually Canada Geese. As a group, they take turns being the leader and the follower. They mate for life and always come back to the same area to nest. They have habits. They protect their own. Is it hard for them to share the follower role, if they would really like to be the leader all the time? Humans are not always good followers. It takes courage to be a leader unless you are a dictator. In the workplace, province, country and even your own home, it is a role that can invite lots of criticism. There are not always lots of thank yous. In family groups, regardless of the age, one child may be more of a leader. It can cause great resentment from others. Trying to be a peacemaker takes great energy! Trying to respect everyone's opinion even if one's opinion is constantly challenged takes patience! Sometimes I would like to be that goose and just flock off- leaving my troubles behind!! Do you like being a leader? A follower? Or do you just like to criticize?

A POSTCARD FROM TORONTO ONTARIO CANADA

Toronto, the capital of Ontario, is a great city with tourists coming from all over the world and Canada to visit. For me, it is my birthplace. My mother was born here and although she has lived out west for the last few years of her life still calls it home in her heart. My children were born here too.
Initially called Muddy York due to the Ontario mud, Toronto means meeting place. Transportation is good. A ride on a streetcar is a must. Do you like the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) archival pictures. Neat, eh?

Some of my postcards from the early 1970's. Family had a few trips to Woodbine Race Track. Mom liked to go a few times a year. Her Dad took her to the old racetrack in the city that is long gone. Do you like the skyline of Toronto- no CN Tower! Moore's sculpture at City Hall was so controversial. Is it art? I always loved it. Trendy Markham Street and Yonge Street. It was a cheap date for Adolph and me to go downtown and walk around Yonge Street!

Modern Toronto with cultural diversity, Bay Street, a great police force- Toronto Cops are Tops- slogan.
Today there is the Occupy Toronto demonstration going on. The city and its people accept protests and peaceful demonstrations. Just hope this one stays calm! Different areas still have a sub-group- Danforth- the Greek community; St. Clair- the Italian community, although a lot have moved to Woodbridge; Bathurst Street- the Jewish community;  many areas have people from the Caribbean and other parts of the world; and of course there are many multi-generational Canadians still living there in the city or near Toronto like I do. The shopping is good with trendy areas and of course The Eaton Centre! When there was the old Eaton's and Simpsons, Mom used to love to go downtown-taking the bus and subway from Richmond Hill to shop and get the bargains. Her favourite haunt was Eaton's Annex where all the returns, end of lines and real bargains existed. We all have fond memories of shopping with Mom. She always could find a bargain. Most of our clothes were bargains-even if the colours did not match our wardrobe!

Pearson Airport with its 3 terminals is an International Airport of modern standards. Look closely at the postcard above and you will see the old Malton terminal. Hard to imagine the small little airport that once existed. I recall departures and arrivals as a child from it.
Vibrant, ever changing! Toronto- love it or hate it! Home to millions and another a million or two in the Golden Horseshoe. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Argonauts, Toronto Raptors and Toronto Lynx also call it home. Don't forget the Entertainment District! Come visit and judge for yourself! I have room! There's lots of room, it is a big city.
Do you like Toronto? Do you hate Toronto? What are your favourite memories of the city?
If you want a postcard featured here, email me at abdm@rogers.com and I will send you my address so you can send me a postcard.

DON'T LET THE TURKEYS GET YOU DOWN

This saying was on a mug I used to have on my desk. Today was an interesting day. When one discovers that someone in one's life really is rather quite contemptuous- it is a nice saying!

CANADIAN CULTURAL DIVERSITY

People from the same culture can be recognized by many traits- language, dress, food, manners. There are so many different cultural groups and sub-groups within those groups. What is culture- ethnicity, religion, rural vs urban, gender, disability, age, sexual preference, citizenship, in Canada- your provincial identity to name a few! The boundaries can be blurred at times. We all can belong to various sub-groups.

Regardless, everyone has their own individuality that needs to be seen. Can we say do not judge me by my identified group? How do you identify yourself? I am Canadian- not a hyphenated Canadian. However, others want to be a hyphenated Canadian! Can we be both- of course! Depending on the situation, we can define ourselves the way we want! We are part of a group and an individual simultaneously!

OH FRIDAY WITH WEEKEND ANTICIPATIONS

I love Fridays. Well, because no matter what the work day brings, it is the end of the week and yeah the weekend. Sometimes my plans are enough for 4 days instead of 2. Then the disappointment not all was accomplished. So today I decided, not to plan anything just to continue to muddle along on all the little tasks and projects in progress to see how much can be done. Throw in hours with the grandchildren! Continue to read a book I started awhile ago. A short country drive to take some much needed blog pictures! Weather permitting or I will watch the world from my window. Sometimes it is good to get off the treadmill of life, trying to do more instead of stopping to enjoy what is in front of me! Shopping, children's lessons, last jaunts to the cottage, street festivals, dinner parties, visiting a sick relative are some of the routine tasks for many people. The housework that never ends-so don't leave it all for the weekend! A little every day! If you are one of the lucky ones-hire a cleaning lady! I continue to be as prepared as possible for that family crisis brewing! Of course, the retirees always say- oh it's the weekend! Enjoy!

DEMENTIA IS NOT A DIRTY WORD

In my professional and private life many people have trouble accepting someone they love actually has dementia. A little memory loss! Some cognitive decline! No it can't be dementia. Well, folks it is. Get the help you need and the understanding. I am not going to give some 5 minute definition- look it up on the Internet as there are lots of sites and definitions, symptoms and treatment plans. When someone withdraws from life, does not care about hygiene, not eating, not drinking, sleeping alot and often does not know who the hell you are then it is advanced. The understanding comes from forgiving the person for being so advanced and stop blaming the person for the behaviour. Just give love, support, understanding and allow the person to leave this earth with dignity and not contempt, criticism for refusing to accept any help from the caregivers.  People get old and get dementia. Remember the good times! Stop blaming the person and be angry at the disease! If you have someone with dementia, then patience and acceptance is important. Do you think dementia is a dirty word? Then shame on you!

NANA SAYS FAMILY DINNERS ARE TOUGH ON CHILDREN

Formal family dinners are tough on children if they are expected to sit quietly at a large table. Not the case at our Thanksgiving dinner. The little 3 year old boys were allowed to come and go while the rest of us ate large portions of food. My husband always has to leave the table early before everyone else is finished. When in our own homes the rules can be our rules. Eventually the little boys will stay at the table and we will have meaningful conversations! Yeah, right! For this Nana, just the joy of having everyone together brought happiness! Little children do not try to act differently because it is a special occasion and the cook has been in the kitchen for hours! They act like little children. Encouraging, offering incentives and having their own spot at the table is paramount. Taking pressure off the parents for having children that act like children is so important. Now if only the Granpa would stay until the end-hum!

CANADA DRY GINGER ALE

Is a common drink in our country. As a child, it was the remedy if home sick with a cold or any childhood ailment. There was always a glass handy to help deal with the situation. I usually drink diet pop but last night found myself drinking a small bottle, full calories of it. I was thinking of my childhood and my mother, I guess.Funny how the unconscious mind comes forward to the present in an inanimate object. There are so many triggers in our lives that have connections to other events. Actually it is a soothing drink and like the ad says has real ginger in it. Did it help? Maybe!

TURN NEGATIVE THOUGHTS INTO POSITIVE ACTIONS

The stresses and painful situations that present in our lives can drag us down. By refusing to succumb to negativity by wallowing in self pity, a wonderful thing can happen. Solutions, positive ones can begin to emerge. No, the hardships do not disappear, but action that can support the situation with meaning and some needed control present itself. My world includes- dealing with painful muscles needing a trip to the doctor for an anti-inflammatory. Use an umbrella on a rainy day. Make a sandwich for lunch out of yesterday's leftover turkey. Let the old folks have some more time together even if in the hospital while awaiting the Nursing Home! Fix what needs fixing in the house to get it ready for the day it goes on the market! Not today- but within the next couple of years. One small thing at a time! What about you? Finish the projects that are on the go- have the good feeling you did it! Work on the relationships in your life! Call a friend and arrange a time together! Be good to yourself! Take time to eat nutritionally, exercise the body and the mind, get rid of toxic people and situations, and reach out to touch the universe! Get out of your comfort zone! Take a risk! The greatest fear is fear itself- someone once said. Negative thoughts keep us treading water instead of swimming to shore, drying ourselves off and beginning a new journey! Are you ready to begin anew? Are you searching for the positive thoughts in your life? Are you starting to find solutions to your problems?

COUNTRY ROADS TAKE ME HOME

Was a popular line in a song. Today after charging the battery for my camera I set out to drive some local country roads looking for photo opportunities. There were many but safety was paramount to make sure I had a safe spot to stop! Even lonely country roads have drivers thinking they are at a racetrack and need to ride up one's butt.
More than just photography it was a chance to do some driving therapy. Cyclists and runners were out in full force enjoying the pleasure of a warm Thanksgiving day. Seeing farms, beautiful country estates and of course the changing colours of the trees were rewarding two hours for me. Cooking, cleaning clutter and waiting for the phone to ring was becoming unbearable!
Although I did not stop at every opportunity, I have some ideas where I can head out next weekend for more photos if weather permitting. Driving for pleasure beats driving in rush hour traffic. Being alone with my thoughts and a cell phone for emergencies if needed, I felt at peace. I like to challenge myself sometimes by doing something alone. As a couple, there can be important togetherness but Adolph and I are individual people. The drive today was much needed space. Do you like to drive for pleasure seeing where the road takes you? Can you be alone, enjoying your own company?

A POSTCARD FROM SWITZERLAND

Switzerland is one European country tourists rave about. Known for not only its banking, chocolates and skiing, it is supposedly extremely clean. It is on my bucket list to visit one day. My daughter Sonya visited when she was an exchange student in Milan, Italy in 1991.
Oct. 27/01"Hi Family! I'm enjoying the day here in Lugano, Switzerland. The weather is great, but it's a little chilly by the water. It's beautiful here. You'ld love all the gardens, Mommy. We plan to go buy lots of Chocolate before we leave. I hope there will be some left to give to you guys when I get back! Miss you and love you all lots.-Sonya xoxo"
My sister Marilee visited the mother of a friend staying in a small town one summer. It was an interesting experience for her as she really did not do much touring. July 14, 1994-" Dear Barb, Adolph & girls. Yes another card from me while I wait in the Village Centre for the stores to open again after lunch(12-2PM). It's been an experience in many ways! But in a few days I'll be on my way home & will fill you in. It has been a very "restful" holiday & I'm looking forward to being more energetic when I get back. Will see you soon. Love, Mare xo"
Although Marilee wrote the card in July, we did not receive it until 3 months later! Lost in the mail! Never was explained. Staying with an older person was very different as anyone can believe if you have had the same experience. The pace can be dreadfully slow!!
If you want a postcard featured here, email me at abdm@rogers.com and I will send you my address so you can send me a postcard.

NAPKINS

Come in paper or cloth. They are present at all occasions. The common everyday ones are useful at every meal. Holidays have a variety of napkins and paper plates to honour the day. Birthdays are a hit with matching napkins to the theme. Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter would not be the same without some new napkin for the day. Special lines from movies- " She folded her napkin!"- a famous scene from The Miracle Worker. Helen Keller folded her napkin! In restaurants, you never put a cloth napkin on your dirty plate! Neatly beside the plate is the proper way! We save napkins from special events. I found a York University napkin in my mother-in-law's memorabilia- it was from my B.A. graduation there in 1973! My mother had a University of Toronto napkin from 1975 when I graduated with my Masters in her things! Wedding, baptism, showers and retirement parties have collections of napkins. Napkins are good for hiding food we did not like! They wipe a smudge off your face. And protect you lap from falling food. Don't lick you fingers-use your napkin!

FALL LEAVES ABOUND WITH COLOUR

As the Fall evolves the colours on the trees are so beautiful. We are reminded how the changing  season brings such a time of beauty and reflection. Our regular routes bring a different canvas. It is times like this I wish I could paint the scenery. On yeah, I have my camera. Tomorrow after this day of cooking, cleaning and of course  eating, a quick country trip with my camea to capture some of the majesty around us will be my reward. What will you do on the real Thanksgiving day? Will you still be eating your first dinner? Or are you like we are- have the dinner on the Sunday so the Monday can be a day of relaxation! Tell me your favourite part of the weekend.

OUR CANADIAN THANKSGIVING

Has been a national holiday on the second Monday of October since 1957. Thanksgiving was celebrated for many years in Canada prior to that but on different dates. In our history, various First Nations' tribes had celebrations for the harvest. The English explorer Martin Frobisher celebrated in 1578 in Newfoundland for a safe passage as well as Samuel de Champlain the French explorer began celebrations in Canada in 1604. Various European celebrations have coincided with Thanksgiving like festivities. Besides eating and having a long weekend, what does it really mean to the average Canadian? For me, it means a time to gather as a family and eat a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Inviting someone who may not have a home to celebrate is always on the list of added guests to the festive table. Reflecting on the harvest and all its bounty can be part of the day. Just being thankful for all the blessings in our lives brings more meaning. Missing those who can not be with us brings many long distance phone calls. What does Thanksgiving mean to you? What is the favourite part of the celebration?

THANKSGIVING WEEKEND

Is a favourite time for Canadians. The anticipation of a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Time to get together as a family. Some people even have more than one dinner to attend. I'll make the traditional bread stuffing handed down from other generations. The girls will bring the baked goods which, of course, include apple and pumpkin pies. Adolph will help with his array of Canadian and Italian vegetables. However, the dinner is mine- I do the cooking and really enjoy it. Will have the grandchildren help with the place names for the table. 12 people. So what are you doing for Thanksgiving! Are you hungry just thinking about all the food? It is a time of thanks! What are your blessings? Why are you thankful?

SUNRISE, SUNSET

Were the beginning words to a song from Fiddler on the Roof. As the sun rises somewhere on earth, it is setting somewhere else. A sunrise gives us a chance to greet a new day. A new dawn! A sunset gives us a chance to reflect on the day's ending. Like life, someone is being born while someone else is dying. The sunset of your life! Many romantic moments happen at sunsets. Especially on beaches! There is something meaningful watching the sun rise or set. The sky can be a myriad of colours. Rhymes about it- Red sky at night sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning sailor's warning. I guess it means something if you are a sailor! We start the day looking to the East and end the day looking to the West. Does the symbolism of directions have some meaning for us as well? The sky has always intrigued humans. We look to the sky because that is where heaven should be. Christ ascended into heaven! If we think of leaving this earth we often think the same way. Sunrise, sunset- without these beautiful daily moments what would our lives be like?

NANA SAYS BABY BLANKETS ARE LOVING

One of my summer projects was knitting squares to make baby blankets. One blanket is in progress and I will be photographing the stages soon to share with my blog readers. I love making blankets but especially ones for babies. All my grandchildren have several blankets made by Nana. I have made them for my children's friends that are having babies. Usually I just keep making them to have a little stock. Hats and scarves are another favourite of mine. Yes I have several scarves on the go too. I put a project near where I sit in the house, like my kitchen table. While waiting for breakfast, I can do a few rows. By my bed and if on a short car trip carry along a project- of course, I am not driving. Spending time using my hands is very therapeutic and there is a product at the end. Do you make special projects with your hands? I am trying to teach my granddaughter to knit. She almost has the skill. Back to blankets- do you find yourself wanting to curl up in one? Or wrapping that little person in one?

KEEP YOUR CHIN UP

Is a good expression when facing a tough time. Keep going! Perservere! It is also a good expression for cosmetic reasons. If you keep your chin up, it also helps to fend off a double chin! One of those little aging tricks that does not need plastic surgery! Just thought I would share!

ADVERSITY

Is described as a misfortune in the dictionary. The condition of adverse fortune. There are times in our lives that are adverse. The real strength of character is how we deal with such hostility. In Christian faith, to turn the other cheek is one approach. Such sayings as " time will tell." "Patience is a virtue." Not responding with hostility does take courage. To wait out adversity in our lives while still trying to find a new path also takes creativity and perserverance our situation, luck, life will turn a corner! Adversity teaches us we are vulnerable. Our true friends come forward and our enemies reveal themselves. Have you ever been down and you noticed some people around you were actually enjoying your misfortune? Do you ever notice some people love to hear of others' misfortunes? While some people actually are sorry to hear such news! During times of adversity, protect yourself! Feeling vulnerable can let your guard down! Share with those who will respect your feelings! Are you experiencing some adversity in your life? What are your strategies to help you through this difficult time?

SQUASH-A CANADIAN STAPLE

You either love squash or you don't! I love all squash. It is so full of vitamins and minerals that it is such a tasty addition to any meal.
There are several varieties with their own distinct taste. I try to serve several kinds on Thanksgiving to include with the other variety of vegetables. Now if I could only get Adolph to try some then I would have it made!
Do you like squash? It is so Canadian and has historic roots. Do you know its history? Tell me!

A GLOOMY AND DARK MONDAY

Sometimes the weather fits our mood. Sometimes it does not! Mondays should be bright and beautiful so it does not feel like a Monday. However today it is dark and gloomy! On the inside and out! How is your Monday? Watch your drive to work and or anywhere! As a pedestrian, watch out for cars! Perhaps by noon the day will change! Wait and see!

A POSTCARD FROM BANFF ALBERTA

Banff is one of the most beautiful places in Canada. Any one travelling west wants to visit this location in the "majestic rockie mountains" as they are called in every site and on every postcard.
Banff is part of the Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage site.  A little history includes it was settled in 1880 after the Canadian Pacific Railroad found its way there. 2 workers discovered hot springs in the area in 1883. George Stephen, President of the Canadian Pacific Railroad gave Banff its name in 1884. He used his birthplace Banffshire, Scotland. The first Banff Springs Hotel was built in 1887 to 1888. In 1911 a newer hotel was built on the site.

Located 78 miles west of Calgary and 36 miles east of Lake Louise, it is a popular location for hiking and skiing. However, any tourist comes home with amazing and beautiful pictures that have been included in generations of family photo albums. The Banff Hotel, although very historic, is rarely the overnight stay for the average Canadian. It is a luxury hotel that has seen many rich and famous.
Our family on a trip west in 1957, visited this community. During a trip west with my children in 1989, we had a visit to Banff. Just incredibly beautiful! Yes, the people are friendly!
I did receive a postcard from Banff from my sister in 1996. " July 7/96- Dear Barb & Adolph, Tash &Sonya. Hello or should I say yahoo? This is a fun town but I think my face is getting laugh-locked. Rob & I have been spending a lot of time together as he has two weeks off. Went with him, Chris & Cheryl to Banff on Sat. It as very busy place but great. Love to ya-all. See you soon. Mare XO"
I have many postcards from this area including ones from 1957. If you look closely at the pictures you will see one small postcard package for 69cents!! How quaint, eh?
If you want a postcard included here, email me at abdm@rogers.com and I will send you my address so you can send me a postcard.

CHE SERA, SERA!

Whatever will be, will be! Was a favourite song from the 1950's! I find myself singing it alot lately in light of the current events in my life. Or I find myself saying aloud to others- it will be what it will be! Some events are simple- set a date and make plans. Other events keep us in limbo! Try to be prepared as best one can under the circumstances! The stress of the unknown can be overwhelming at times. So using the standard strategies of getting through a hard time- sleep, eat nutritionally, less is more, slow down and take time to do the tasks at hand! Reach out and hug someone! How do you deal with stress when facing the unknown? Or do you find yourself singing Che sera, sera!!

OCTOBER IS HERE

The month of Canadian Thanksgiving, Halloween. Shorter days are becoming prevalent. Trying to wear those cotton clothes one more time before putting them away until next Spring. Deciding-is it a year to buy a new coat and boots? Visiting those farmers' markets knowing they will be closing soon and back to Supermarket buying! The beginning of each month always brings a time of reflection- what may this month bring! Dinner parties, birthdays, where to eat Thanksgiving, to do some baking or not! Even thinking about getting the Christmas shopping started if you have not begun already. I purchased some sale items over the summer to use. Cleaning the garage and cleaning up the garden! The leaves- yes the raking of leaves. Why can't they all come down at the same time! What will be my goals for the month? Right now the left over ones from September! What can I do for fun? Is there something special to consider?
